hey guys broke my collarbone 11/15 doctor said it would take 6 to 8 weeks. doctors sometimes stretch this date a little/ just curious to know how long it really takes

I broke both collarbones and that seems legit. i think i was riding in 6 weeks. But they recommend not to. I think about after 3-4 weeks i was out of my sling using my arm. just not stressing it

I never had a sling for any of my 3 broken collarbones. Each time I had these straps with pads that went under the arm pits and pulled both shoulders back. Had to wear that for 6 weeks. Never had any PT and never had any problems.

Each was a clean break all the way through the bone. I never had my bone sticking out through the skin though. :eek2:

It definitely hurt when they first put the should harness contraption into place as it repositioned the bones so they realigned. Once in place though, it really wasn't painful...except damn near impossible to get out of bed.

I know Dan Harris has broken his 3 times too. I don't think he has one bit of trouble with his either. It will heal stronger than it was originally because it will get a little lump of bone around the break in addition to the bone itself mending itself.

its a real struggle tryin to get outta bed. went to the doctors this morning, theres a 50/50 chance their going to have to operate b/c the bones are so far apart. the bone is still poking against(not through) the skin, and it is sooo f***ing irritating. they said it will heal faster but surgery sucks!! next appt is monday morning, they will decide then what their gonna do. not looking forward to it.....

I broke mine in 2 places. The x-ray looked like a Z. It took 6-8 weeks for it to heal and I still felt the injury for a year. Mine sticks out to the skin about an inch, but my doctor said it would be stronger this way than if I had surgery either to correct it or shave the bone down.

I had to wear the straps that pulled your shoulders back and made you stick your chest out and look like a tough guy.

The hardest thing for me when I broke mine was driving and shifting my truck which was a 5 speed.

Listen to what the doc says. I tried to cheat it, and ended up rebreaking mine. If it feels strong enough to ride on, but it's only been 4 weeks, wait another 3 or 4. One small wreck or even just a hard landing and your back to square one. Trust me lol.

Of all the injuries, I always thought the collarbone was the easiest but hearing more and more horror stories. My wife sings that song every time I get an injury but she knows there is no reason to think I am going to hang it up this time. :p I'll be back in February.

IF you have the opportunity to have the surgery-DO IT! Yuor recoop time is SOOOO much faster and less painful. also things will line up better.
MY Daughter had to have a plate and 4 screws last summer. she had a 2 inch separation and the bone almost punctured her lung. She felt 50 times better in 7 days.
If your bones are too far apart it will take a very long time for them to join and you could have a very bad lump.
I honestly dont know why they dont do more surgeries on this to begin with on bad breaks.

If your Dr. is going to make you wait that long and then decide I would be finding me a new Dr for another opinion. thats a bunch of ****.Ther eis no reason to make you go that long if there is good chance you will need the surgery.

I was totally thinking the same thing...almost wondering if things were as bad as he said. I've never heard of waiting...I planned to talk to my wife who works at Duke in a stepdown unit for transplants and trauma patients. She will know if people come to her floor with broken collarbones from accidents and then head back to the operating room.

Actually, my Daughters Dr said we could have waited, butg he said it would be pointless, it was up to us on what we wanted to do. If given the option I most def. would not wait it out if you have insurance. We did have to wait a week before we could have the surgery done.
I think the worst part of it all now is the hardware causes her pain, especially in the winter when its cold.

That was the bone specialist I met with last wed. He said that if it didnt heal properly in 8-12 wks that he would recommend surgery. Sounds like surgery is honestly the way to go for recoup time. I run a loader at my job, so this is def not the best injury for that!

I will throw up some before shots of her xrays and post IP pics, then current for you to see before you decide but I think you will be wanting the surgery imho. Make sure you pre cert with your insurance and with the Dr. That he will approve it . I can't imagine why not if its a bad break.

One more thing... You can always have the hardware removed later f its bothersome. Right now kelseys biggest issue is wearing a neck brace and battling ache in hardware in cold months. Hope this helps some and speedy recovery to you . :)

Checked with Connie and amazingly, she hasn't had a single patient with a collarbone break.

Definitely sounds like your breaks are way worse than mine. I never even saw a doctor again until the shoulder straps came off six weeks later.

Hang in there man. I do know what you mean. Hopefully you are taking something to help with the pain.

Best of luck! I am going through PT right now to get mobility and strength in my shoulder after Bankart Surgery...to fix torn labrum and remove a piece of cartilage.
