do yourself a favor and stick with the 7.3.

i would give the 6.0 a couple more years until considering one. too many ppl around here havin problems with em, 7.3's are proven tough.

There are pros and cons of each truck. What are your main goals and usage for both trucks. What are your mods planned? Any real substantial info you can give us will help you decide which one would be better suited to you and your needs.

hey man, im a pretty big powerstroke fan and know alot about the 7.3 idi and a little about the 6.0 but i do know that the 6.0 was a pos the first few years... ford rushed it out and didnt fix the bugs in it so if you get a 6.0 get a newer one... also the 7.3 is really strong truck if your going to do a lot of towing use the 7.3, the turbo on the 6.0 is better design but that is how it gains it power back is from the turbo set, the down fall is theres more stuff going on in there so more to go wrong, you also have to beat on the 6.0 to get the carbon out of the turbo(no joke) look up a guy named bill on youtube... type in powerstroke hes got a site called powerstrokehelp.com i think also... but if you have a weekend with nothing to do watch the vids that hes posted they teach you lot.

theres a few changes with the 94-97 psd and the 99-03? the inkectors are differnt and a few other things... i cant rember them all but its a good set up both ways..

i really like fords, but my brother got a 05 6.5 duramax and that is areally nice truck. he tuned it and its a crazy rig.

but out of the early diesels a 97 crew cab psd is the way to go. i'm thinkin about gettin a 97 near me CC LB 4X4 the works but they want 7300 and shes got 195K so thats a little steep for me... but i'll see... best of luck with your find but check out that gut on youtube. i'll post his link up if you want me to.

no its not set up for pullin but it sure is funny that you have to BEEF up the suspension in order to boost launch or pull without a disaster......IFS does not belong in a HD truck.......imo that is pretty sad.....

Alright. How much are you looking to spend?

Just an FYI, if you're doing much pulling with an auto 7.3 you better be ready to build the trans. They won't take much.

7.3 all the way! no need to waste your time with a sick-o lol My dad's has 320k of hard miles and it runs great. Either way i'd invest in some gauges, like a edge attitude monitor. even if it's stock,it's always nice to know what your engine is doin and the factory dummy gauges are junk imo.

everything i've ever read tells me that all roads point to the 7.3. the 6.0 seems like a good engine but the 7.3 is more reliable and overall a better choice.

Yes the town i live in I know 5 people with strokes. 2 of us have 03 f350 6.0 2 have newer 6.0's and one has a 7.3 and the 7.3 is always breaking down and needing in the shop. He then sold it to get a 6.0. You just got to get the right 6.0.

And btw, if we go by the years that mean the 6.0 is better then the 6.4. Considering the 6.4 was out for 3 years 08 09 10.

Everyone, is goin to be bias about there trucks they own.

Only problem i have had with my truck is that some kid this week thought he would be a Hard *** and take my bolts out of my starter and yank it half way out. Had to be towed home with my dads 97 f150 2wd truck. Picture this in your head. A f350 lifted 6inches with 35's being towed by a 2wd Truck.

Why did i get banned from powerstroke.org? I was in the chat feature one night and this guy name westcoast and i started talking crap to him and he turned out to be a mod. He then banns me from the whole site.

not to change subjects, but if you're towing in 4wd in non-blizzard conditions, you shouldn't be allowed to drive again. i don't get what being 2wd has anything to do with it?

I don't think he so much meant that, as he meant that 2WD trucks are generally lower to the ground/smaller looking then 4x4's. So it looked that much smaller in front of his:)

6.0's are no where near as reliable as the 7.3's . the 6.0 are good engines if you have the money to get it studded and fix some other problems but that will set you back a pretty penny and its not simple. engine either has to be removed or the cab has to be removed. his 7.3 might have broke alot but what does that matter???? more 6.0's break than 7.3's . i own a 7.3l with 210k and as you can see from previous pics its not stock. she still kickin....my buddies 05 6.0 has 60k and is startin to go downhill but owell he has it covered up to 200k so a new engine will only cost him 100 bucks lol...but anyways have fun when yours blows the head gasket (unless its been studded) cause 03 are the worst year of the 6.0 to have

woodsracer144

i agree with you with about every thing you said...

there is a 7.3 that has 800K on it and it was a test truck for diff. turners had propane injection on it tested meth, all that stuff and she still turned out 800K....

it all comes down to the guy thats is flipping the bills and turnin wrinches... if you take care of stuff, it will take care of you. it doesnt matter if the dome light burns out... some one that cares a crazy amount about their rig will have the small things right... air caps, small lights all them small things....

change the oil, fuel filter... if its not running right dont keep on going with it hoping that it will make it the extra 2 hours of the trip...

every one to their own... theres going to be a few bad 7.3s but theres going to be some really good 6.0's but over all i think the 7.3 has the best rep...

you can get a OBS (like that red one) fairly cheap... 97 by me blue CC LB PW every thing 7200... 190K4x4

Where did you get the idea of me towing in 4wd? Did i even mention that anywhere in my post?

2wd drive trucks sit lower then a 4wd truck? NOT? So my intent on saying that was to picture a 2wd drive f150 towing a 4x4 f350 lifted 6inches on 35's.

What kind of chip do you have in your 7.3? Cale(BTS Tuner) does custom tune for them, you know that right?

He tuned my 6.0 and it ran really well. He tweaked the tune 4 or 5 times until I was completely satisfied.

all of my dad trucks and mine have been tuned by cale and my dad's only 6.0 left has everything Banks makes for it, and then everything they do to the 6.0s to make them last.... We also got setup to where cale can email me a new tune for my fathers truck and i can upload it if we want to change anything on the truck.

i think i might have trannie problems in my future.......not sure it shifts hard. i have the edge evolution programmer (dash mount)

03 7.3L it has a shift firmness setting and i take mine all the way down in each gear and it still shifts hard, especially in 3(extreme)

it dosent shift hard when its in stock trim, i bought the programmer mainly for towing and the truck is mostly in 2(race 80hp) unless im towing 1 (towing 60hp i think)

yep

if you really want to gain some HP try a cold air intake, larger exhaust and throw in a propane injection system in( propane is only used under load like nos would im sure you knew this but anyways...) also i would check them trans shift kits that plug in to the trans like the bully dong...

03 7.3L it has a shift firmness setting and i take mine all the way down in each gear and it still shifts hard, especially in 3(extreme)

it dosent shift hard when its in stock trim, i bought the programmer mainly for towing and the truck is mostly in 2(race 80hp) unless im towing 1 (towing 60hp i think)

get rid of the edge they are known for trans and engine failure, sct like the other guy said is pretty good, with the x3 you can get someone such as (dp-tuner,innovative, cale, tony wildman, ect ) to write you some tunes and email them to you.

get as diff tuner. trans could have also been torn into before and a shift kit could have been added.

Tony Wildman, DP Tuner, and Cale are the only tunes that would EVER go into a 7.3 I owned. Edge, diablo, all of those other generic tuners are very hard on a trans.

I don't care what anyone says, the auto in the 7.3 is pretty weak. Just like everyone else has said, call BTS and they will hook you up on a good trans.

7.3 FTW

there are other good ones, php, matt at gearhead, and a couple more. generic tunes will hurt your truck in long run....i just couldn't drop 4300 on a trans at that time when mine went, but the 4r100 is better than dodges stuff. no stock trans is good not even a allison

My fathers 97 GMC dually with the 454 has a th400 automatic. I gotta say, it's going on 120k and notta ounce of problems. A lot of towing too.

But stickshift is the way to go for towing.

as far as chips i would go DP or TW.

i've been talking to some guys over at powerstroke.org and a few mods to your tranny and it should hold up to the chip no problem.

shoot me a PM if you want some more info

as long as your tranny is workin good, a good valve body from (BTS) and a nice TC should do you fine but i would only do this with a low mile tranny you are at higher risk of somethin going wrong and takin all the new stuff with it with more miles on the stock trans. also you need a bigger trans cooler. you can use a 6.0 cooler.

mine lasted 200k. thats 200k with a hard life. i know why it went...b/c of what i put it through.... owell atleast it went at home and not on the road. . . .. funny thing was one of my batterys went dead and i had to get a kid to jump start me from work and he had a z71 and after he jumped me off he said "now you got the blood of a chevy runin through it" i laughed and got in the truck to leave pulled out of work and bam it went..... i got it home by the time i parked it i couldn't get it to move well....ohwell i still drove her to the trans shop and roasted the hell out of the trans. it was going to need a rebuild anyways so i let her have it. stoppin at a stop light was hell had to get her up to about 3k and only movin at about 5mph...ohwell she good now but i will prob put a 6 speed in it next time. soooo word to the wise get a manual or get a bts if you got a money tree

Just join the powerstroke forums and read up. 75% of the KIDS in this thread have no idea what they're talking about.:ermm:

I own an 06 6.0 as some of you know. I have 53k miles on it right now and just blew my second set of headgaskets, with the ARP's already in it. The problem is getting the heads flat and doing the proper torquing secquences. Most of the techs are not allowed to do such things because of Ford's rules though. After they "fix" it this time, I'm going to tear into it myself and have the heads machined, even though Ford says not to... what a joke.

I've had my truck a little over 2 years and it's been in the shop a fair amount of time, but I wouldn't give it up for a 7.3 any day of the week. It just takes a lot more money to make a 7.3 run at the power levels of a 6.0. The 5R110 is way better than the 4r100.

I however cannot wait to get rid of it for a 6.4.

6.0 are nice trucks i have driven several which have been custom tuned and i would love to have one but i would not care to keep messin with the head gaskets. sounds like you got a pesky one on your hands. yea the 5r110 is better but if i was pullin a load accross the country and i had my choice of a 50,000 mile 7.3 or a 50,000 mile 6.0 i would take the 7.3. yea it might be slower but it deff is more reliable and easier to fix on the side of the road. my 7.3 has 210k on the clock and still going strong. i wouldn't mind puttin a 5r110 behind the 7.3

If I had the money, I'd fix it myself the correct way. Until then it just keeps going back to the dealer. Cant wait to get in a 6.4

Do your self a favor get a &.3 Or wait for the new Ford 6.7 International built the 7.3 and 6.0 7.3 are good trucks factory turbo gets worn out because of overspull the 6.0 are a bad *** powerplant with the right mods but before you can even start it needs head studs and anywhere around here in NW Missouri its a cab off operation and can run upwards of $6k if that scares you look at a Duramax I work on diesels alot and know quite a bit so if there is anything else you wanna know message me...

Dont machine the heads 400exrider707 there is like .002 of valve clearance and you will f u k those heads up quick. Its like a 2k dollar mistake, do some research first.

EGR and Headstuds are the only thing holding the 6.0 back. Once those issues are taken care of its a great motor that is very reliable. Not to mention you can tune it and pull an extra 140hp to the wheels and dip into the 13s,

some guys have been able to do studs without removal of cab.

There is .018" You can safely do up to .008" and some have gone as far as .010" though I dont recommend it. Any competent machine shop should be able to do this and you can always machine the valve seats so the valves sit a touch farther in the head.

I have done the research.

13's is right. There's a few reg cab trucks running low 13's on tuning alone.
