Just thought i'd post up.

I took the GPS out with me on a ride the other day. On a straight country road the ex hit 67mph. I couldn't get anymore out of it, the garmin just records the max speed so i just put it in my pocket and take off and it'll record the max speed at any point.

My friend was with me on a new 450ltr, mostly stock. That went 78mph.

My friend has a trail tech vapor and we read 68mph on his 400ex

68mph is all I got mine to go with stock gearing.

u dont have any performance mods dude haha, and i doubt the tires or nerf bars are gonna give ya that much more speed.

ok all the people claiming 70+, post your gearing. at 69 mph, mine sounded like if i sneezed it was going to blow up. i don't like top speed debates, but i have to wonder about the claims of quads with nothing aftermarket that could possibly affect top speed except a little bit taller tires..

tayyo789
11-13-2009, 02:28 PM
ya theres no way an ex will go that fast without special gearing. lets try and keep this from turning out like the raptor top speed debate shall we?

My buddy had a 400ex that was relatively stock (pipe, filter, rejet)with 22 inch tires and 15/38 gearing that would do 80.... down a hill. On flat ground, it was only good for around 73-74.

tayyo789
11-13-2009, 02:52 PM
22's with tall gearing...i'll believe the 73-74. that hill that he hit 80 on must have been pretty steep and really long with a very strong wind at his back. Or he has the same grips as Jakeyracer

15/38 gearing with 20" tires. I've ran it beside a truck, clocked with a radar over and over again to make sure. 73 mph is all i could get. Oh, and i only weigh 130lbs so that could have something to do with it

my trail tech vapor read 81.0 last time i rode if the wether is ok sunday over here i will ride again and take a pic and post it for u guys and im currently running 16/38 gearing

the quads going out tomorrow my buddys gonna take it for a spin while i take his triumph for a boot as my bikes not here right now :)

I'm thinking that some of you guys have your Tom-Toms, GPS's, and Radar guns set on Kilometers rather that MPH.

either that, Or I'll need to get me a pair of those Spider grips.

I quit worring about top speed. I know how fast my bike will go, and I don't care how fast the wheeler will go.

BTW, for those of you wil trail techs, if you don't have the tires measured perfect, it may be a little off.:blah:

lol your gearing would have you doing like low 60s with the extra rpms and bigger tires.

All i know is from my personal experience, my rather new 07 with slip-on will go 67mph. You can't argue with the garmin either it's real accurate, i use it over my car speedo.

Anybody else who says they are going 70+ with a slip-on or/and an air filter, are just plain full of it!

When I bought my new grips it was a toss-up tween the OURY and the Spiders. I'll definately be goin with the Spiders next time. Although I have had pretty good gains throughout with my Duncan racing decals. If anyone knows of a faster decal I'm interested. Not to steal the grip thread though, Carry on.

I've got Spider Grips on mine and my top end hasn't changed a bit. Now the torque is a whole diiferent story. I can pull the wheels in 5th gear running at about 20mph. Forget spending big bucks on your motor or exhaust and go for the grips instead.

LMAO, Hey Killer, you really just don't get it do you ? and I belive you have said -1 front and +4 rear on BOTH of your posts. (BTW- -1 front Slows you down. +4 rear ALSO Slows you down.) & +2 on the rear tires dosent make up for that.
Sorry Pal, but the only thing that you have gained momentum on, is the rate at which you are losing your credibility. LMAO!

Jakey,
What does "STFU" stand for ???
Hmmm, let me guess.....
"Still - Telling - Funny - Untruths" ???

And Guenther,
I had the same results but I just figured out the fix.
I think you may have installed the grips on the wrong sides.
just go swap them from left to right and you'll be back to the same torque, but with incredible HP gains.

I'm not sure exactally HOW much, cuz' I just had it out in the driveway, so I couldn't get through all the gears,.....

But I'm pretty sure that it now has an 8 speed tranny too.
I'm tellin' 'ya these grips are freaking AMAZING !

I guess all that time and money I spent on performance upgrades, and at the dyno shop was just a waste!

ok can we stay on topic here some ex s does go faster than others but it takes alot of money to get there and im sure my ex goes faster than 80mph. but i have alot of mods and money tied up in my ex. the people with just a slip on and air filter it will take bigger tires bigger gearing and a couple of miles to do higher mphs.

Miami_Vice454
11-14-2009, 03:13 PM
i do about 73, i have a 15 in the front. no matter how much power you have you are still going to have the same top speed unless you change the gearing.

11-14-2009, 06:52 PM
I was always told 72MPH with stock gearing. I see most figuring high 60's. I just have a question to ask about the speed recorded... did you bounce the rev limiter? If you dont tag the rev limiter n 5th you dont know the actual top speed. I'm not even sure if its possible without uncorking them, mine stock is so slow at trying to get up that high I think its restricted. A few mods later and I could tag it no problem. Before I sell mine I should do a test and report back with the results.

I can go 118K's, which translates to about 73mph, with stock 15 38s, and rear 20s. The engine is a 440 with a white brothers e series and some stuff but that wouldn't make any difference. I did stick the 25 inch tires off my dads foreman once just for laughs and I couldnt even wind out 4th gear, it was dangerous. This speed was with a garmin gps too.

Careful there guenther...
you don't want to take it off topic again,...
that might make the guys with 80+mph 'fo-hundys angry.

Oh, btw,...
I've also heard that if you duct tape a spider grip to your swingarm, it will corner like its on rails, and if you stick another one in the fuel tank you'll never run out of gas!:D

I have a stock engine wise 400ex with just minor mods like pipe kn drilled box etc and stock gearing with 20in tires. i also purchased a trail tech edurance computer set to mph with the corect front tires size. it very acurate until i top it out it might be accurate but i dought it it says i did 80.5 mph. what do u think is wrong?

your quad won't do 80, so whatever your using is wrong. If you wanna find true to speed borrow somebody's gps and let it eat.

katch26
11-16-2009, 01:28 PM
not really but whatever you call the final mounted tire size. A X" tire isnt always exactly X" tall and seeing as how the computer doing equations than it needs to have an accurate height to "calculate" speed. Same goes for the online calculator you need the actual height not the sidewall stamp.

What he is saying,
is that he suspects jdog75 entered the manufacturer's stated tire diameter/circumference,
as opposed to actually MEASURING the diameter/circumference for himself.

I suspect the same thing.

Also, if you change to a different tire,....
(even if it is called out to be the same size),
you would need to RE-Measure the ACTUAL tire diameter/circumference,
and RE-Calibrate the computer to the MEASURED diameter/circumference.

in other words, you cannot go by what the tire is SUPPOSED to be.
You MUST measure them for yourself, to have the computer be accurate.

ive never had a trail tech so i wasnt sure if there is a sensor or something that mounts on the wheel, like on a bicycle. it just made sense to me that if there was one that it would mount on the wheel.

You STILL must measure the actual TIRE diameter/circumference, and enter that measurement into the computer.

yeah thats it. It get confusing cause I consider a wheel a rim and some consider the wheel a mounted assembly but whatever it is you need the actual finished height.

Yesterday while riding I was feeling kind of high on myself because I knew my spider grips had improved the performance and looks of my bike 10 fold. So there I was sitting and looking at a 100 foot jump across a river and I thought, "what the heck my spiders got me covered." I drove back to about 1/4 mile, punched the gas but when I hit 88mph I was sent forward in time and saw every bike in the future has spider grips. Kind of takes the fun out of knowing you have something special on your bike that many others don't. I'm switching back to Scott grips now because I don't want to look like a poser.
