06 400EX

Still running strong! Just curious what all is involved to upgrade a 400 to say a 416 kit? What all has to been changed? Is there a considerable difference in power. Basically would it be worth it to do this mod? What would a rough price be for the parts? Assuming I do all the labor unless boring is involved.

Thanks Dave

I just did a 416 here is the breakdown..

JE 87mm 10.8:1 piston kit $167.99
89mm Cometic oversized gasket kit $ 39.54
Cylinder Bore & hone $ 45.00
shipping on parts $ 1.13
Sales Tax $18.26

For the grand total of $ 271.92
I did all the work myself except the bore and hone the local Honda shop did that..

How is the power difference? Were you happy with the outcome?

of course he was happy with it...lol what kinda question is that
j/k, i have no idea if he was happy or not...but i can tell you, dont go with a larger displacement, unless your absolutely set on it or need it due to part failure or whatever...i have seen stock bore bikes keep right up with the guys who just have a bigger piston and no other mods...all im sayin is, if your looking for more power, you dont necessarily have to go bigger bore. look into an exhaust, cam, timing advance key, filter...all good mods, that will provice more power
but if you do bore, and your worried about power gains, make sure to get the hi compression piston, those make a MAJOR difference.

p.s. just thought id throw in the fact that a $750,000 house right up the street from me is burning to the ground as we speak
a freakin blaze
what a trip!

it took about 500 bucks for me to do mine how i wanted, it just wasnt right without the cam and jet kit, i got 11:1 stage 2 hotcam, dynojet kit, pro x cam chain, no airbox lid and shaved the head very minimal with a mild port and polish, if u dont at least add a cam and jet kit then put ur money in a sparks key, exhaust, etc...

Jet kits are pretty much a waste of money but can be good for learning how to jet if you don't know what you're doing. You can always save some money there as you get better.

im with rocky_mtn_honda. there r a ton of 450`s i ride with. and hav no problem stiking with them or even leading them thru trails. i hav full hmf system,165main,42pilot, 1 1/2 from botttom and 13 tooth sprocket luv it. may go 416 just to get to top of a long steep hill. the only bike to make it yet is 505ktm. first ill raise compression. i think thats all i need. i make it just as far as the 450`s.

kits maybe a waste if u know what jet u need, then its way cheaper, agreed. At the same time i spent 50bucks for the kit when i could have saved that and put it towards a 450r carb, but live and learn i guess, thats what ill be doing soon.

First thing Dave is what kind of ridding are you doing?

haha YEAH I just broke it in today and OMG the differance is very impressive will pick the front end up just rolling into the throttle in 2nd. I need to rejet..thinking about a 165 main and a 42 pilot...Yeah I know the 42 pilot should already be in there lol...
this thing had pretty good torque before the 416 and now its like riding a new bike!!!!!!!!:D I had to bore mine because of some scoring on cylinder wall so I just went for the 87mm and it was smoking like a pig lol...

i got the same results from mine, just rollin thethrottle in 2nd and wheels will come up, i had a 165main in it, i thought it was still a little rich so i went to a 155 and it seems to be to lean, doesnt pull up as easy, and i still need to up my pilot as well, its still stock.

Woah,

Sorry about the late reply but I work weekends. I mainly ride trails, with an occasional track thrown in there.

Sure hope that house was insured!!!!

Really appreciate all the suggestions guys. Above all I want reliability. I've just become use to the 400's power. When I first bought it, I could hit the gas and it would try and pull out from under me. I may look into some of your suggestions when I decide to upgrade.

Thanks Dave
