They just put up the article on the Gas Gas and it got me to thinking how nice it would be for a street legal quad of sorts....

http://www.atvriders.com/atvreviews/gas-gas-2009-wild-hp-450-gabriel-racing-atv-review.html

I think one built expressly for street use (any brand) would be killer and sell well...what say you?

Some states you can do this like AZ, I know for a fact that ohio will not even entertain the idea. I know of one aftermarket company that was looking into making street legal kits and ran into problems with DOT. Here in Ohio I think your quad would have to be really wide to fit in the groove. Our roads are horrible with real bad raod crown.

Id like to see one built specifically for road use.....like how the spider was designed but be a quad. Not a huge fan of the spider pre se'.

A unit that handled the road better then a regular atv.......was more comfortable for extended riding etc.

Its going to come down to safety and get trashed every time. Thanks but no thanks. Let me judge whats safe for me please. The worst part is the decisions are mostly made by the people who wouldn't be riding them anyway.

I feel like motorcycles are far more dangerous than any quad would be on the roads. They are only ok since they are grandfathered in and been around forever. Something as "dangerous" as a motorcycle would never be able to be invented and become accepted into mainstream transportation in our current society. It is really sad.

I have motorcycles, dirtbikes, and quads. I would love to be able to run to Lowes or Home Depot for little things and use my quad. If its bolts or something I can use my bike, but most of the time it is something that would be too much of a hassle to take my bike. A gallon of paint, a few brushes and a roller would be a total pain to strap to a bike. However on a quad it would be no problem with the racks. Instead I end up almost always take the big V8 gas hog of a truck.

In the northeast where I am I would almost prefer it at times in the winter too. I don't see snow/sleet/ice being an issue on a quad. In fact I would almost look forward to it, plus I would be saving gas, and being much more environmentally friendly at the same time.

I think its a great idea but I dont think that it will fly anytime soon. However that said I have taken my old 250R to the store in a blizzard before. 8" of snow in the road with Ice underneath it is awful lot of fun when you know there wont be anyone else around.

That seems to be a bike conversion....?

The site is sort of vague, but I believe it was designed ground up as a street quad. It's obviously bike-esque in the seating position and all, and the motors are sourced from a bmw motorcycle. But I don't think it's a conversion. I could be wrong. idk?

I think the main problem the government has with making quads road legal is the solid rear axle. Unless you are an experienced rider it is very easy to wipe out on pavement. The quads I have seen street legal in the united states usually use a one wheel rear end kit.

they do it in europe...

why are we being controlled by the safety lobby:confused: if you can ride a motorcycle without a helmet there should be no reason not to put turn signals and mirrors on a quad.

maybe its the auto industry that is preventing this. if we ride our quads in the cold and snow/ice we will use our cars and trucks less. four wheels give you winter capabilities that two whels do not...

Since I have been around quads (1998) this topic has come up all the time. Final answer that I have found is this...

Once you have 4 wheels, you MUST follow all auto rules for that state.
-- 15 mph bumpers
-- no solid axle
-- Turn singals etc.
-- Mirrors
-- And so on.

Basically, it needs to be a car once it has 4 wheels.

3 wheels/2 wheels follow the bike rules...which is why trikes can be made legal.

This topic kills me. Motorcycles are way more dangerous

Bicycles here get everything, they can ride without registration, fees, safety equipment. They can ride 2 wide legally. During the summer months a drive home usually means driving on the other side of the road half the time to get around them nearly getting in headon collisions.

Millions are spent in this state on bike lanes. Police escort bike races free of charge. Races happen on main roads all the time. I followed behind one race where there was a pack of 100 riding down both sides of the road, the oncoming traffic had to pull off the road to let them through.

Meanwhile, ATVs are paying road tax when we buy gasoline so these bicyclists can use the public roads for their hobby.

My town of 3000 people is spending $300,000 for "bicycle related improvements" this year.

Its all about who's in power and who they like.
