Hey guys. I figured it was tire to start a build thread for my 400ex. As a few of you may know, I did a mini tear-down and build-up a week or two ago.
Here is a few pictures of what I did to it. I will update it through January as I tear it down for a larger scale rebuilt over the winter.

When I bought it.

What do you guys think?

Also, this winter I am going to do +2 arms, and an extended axle, along with lots of powder coat. Pictures will be posted in this thread. :macho

**My complaints so far. I forgot to put my skid plate back on before I took pictures. Also, I had to use zip ties to put the top of the hood on. I couldn't find any other way. But it still looks very nice I think.

** Also I'm going to put a 450r carb on later this year...

I got the hood from eBay. Only cost me $66.00 and looks brand new. However, http://www.fwcarbon.com/, seems to have a good hood for the 400ex that looks almost identical.

Thanks for the comments :D

I did mix and match. The bars are Renthal but the pad is Pro Taper ;)

Thanks for all the compliments, guys

What color is that and is it just rattle can? Im thinking time to do the frame like that!!

flyboy1294
11-07-2009, 03:47 AM
I'm not sure of the color. But yes it is a rattle can. It beats all I've ever seen; it's not a thick paint. It's very thin and is almost candy/transparent. I take high grit sand paper and sand everything to bare-metal, then use a grill-cleaning wire brush to make scratches in one direction, then paint. You can't see it in the pictures, but it gives it a brushed undertone almost. I really like it,

Hey I'm gonna hijack my own thread here for a second;

I need to take the head off this winter for HD headstuds. Do you guys have any other ideas for mods that I can do while I'm in there? I'm thinking maybe an aggressive port&polish. Any other ideas? (also keep in mind I'm on a budget.)

tayyo789
11-07-2009, 09:48 PM
dont do the aggressive p&p unless youre getting an aggressive cam. If i were you i'd keep it mild. you can always make it more aggressive if its not enough

flyboy1294
11-08-2009, 06:30 AM
Alright mild would still be beneficial, correct?

Also, how about Kibblewhite Valves? I've heard good things about them before. Would it be a good idea to replace valves on a build that was already completed?

flyboy1294
11-08-2009, 04:30 PM
Some final pics.

By the way, today was my first ride since installing the 450r shocks. I can't believe the difference. They are stiff, but I'm 140 with full gear on so it makes since. The +2s will even that right out. On jumps I can't believe the difference. It is plush and the arms come about level with the chassis and this is with about 6ft of air. I couldn't be happier and would recommend them to anyone.

yes the mild will be beneficial. its just cheaper to stay conservative than to go all out and maybe have to buy a new head if you dont want it so aggressive. as far as the kibblewhite valves, i have never used them, but the people that i see with them, tend to have the bigger bore motors, predominantly 440's. but i guess it depends on what size the valves are

i wish i had gone with a more aggressive port and polish with a 5 angle valve job, and keep in mind that when you are thinking about switching over to titanium valves that you will have to re surface and lapp the valves, also consider the fact that putting new valves in probly wont make a noticeable difference at all, unless that is you are going up in size which is a pain cause you have to re-seat the valve seats

Ah I see. Well maybe new valves aren't a good idea for me. I'd rather not have to deal with re-seating, etc. I think a mild p&p will be ok to start off with. I'm really using this as a learner bike. Once I feel comfortable on it in a racing scenario or atleast riding aggressively(next year or two) I'll either make a swap for a 450r, or go with a mill transplant. I like having a quad that I can take to the mines, take to the (amateur) track, and then go trail riding with all on the same day. So with a little extra spunk I should be thrilled.

flyboy1294
01-30-2010, 12:55 PM
Digging up an old thread.

I totally tore the quad down to the engine and frame the first week or December, and just pieced it back together today.

I got +2 Laeger arms and a +4 Lonestar Axcaliber axle. That might not seem like much, but I totally replaced every component in the front end and back end. The previous owner didn't do maintenance.

So with all that said, I have a few pictures of the tear down. I still have a lot in store for it. Before the end of the month I am getting a new full exhaust system and a stage 3 hotcam. In the future I will get it completely powdercoated and get a port and polish with a 450r carb.

Here are the pics:

It's been awhile, but the build is still in progress. The quad sits in several hundred pieces at the moment.

The head is being prepped to be sent off and have Kibblewhite's installed, along with a valve job and P&P.

I'm going to have the frame painted. But before I do, I was wondering if I should invest in a gusset kit? I've heard that 400ex frames like to crack around the front shock mounts. So is a gusset kit necessary? And if it is, what is a good kit and where is a good place to get it.

I didn't want to start a new thread :o

It is stock. I used a Quadtech 250r Carbon Fiber hood, but I would not reccommend anyone else using one for a 250r. It doesn't fit right up towards the tank. I had to use zip ties to attach it.

But if you use a Carbon hood made for a 400ex it will work much better. I will post pictures of what I did here in a second.

Alright here is how it sits now. Frame is being prepped for powder today. Engine is torn down to the case waiting for head work to be done.

Fatboy:
I took a cutting bit on a dremel and cut the headlight assembly off, then went down towards the nose of the plastic and made it a rectangle so the scoop in the hood would blow on the oil cooler. It isn't much, but it helps. Here are some pics

Thanks man! I can't wait to get all the powder coat done. I found a guy local and he is charging next to nothing. I'll post pics when it's totally done. We are probably looking at May before it's drivable again. Been a long time coming :eek2:

Clemsonteh:
In some of the first pictures that have most air, it was about a 15ft tall jump. I had to hit a corner and turn sharp to hit it. I'd do in revving high in 2nd gear and get about 10 feet of air.

In the later pictures were it looks like the jump is lower, it was a smaller jump with a better run. I was hitting them in 3rd or 4th gear. Probably doing 25-30mph. My record was 56ft of distance and 6 feet of air at the back wheels. Hope that helps

clemsonteg
03-23-2010, 07:55 AM
thanks for the info. I am starting to make jumps and seems like I don't get much air. Ill have to try a little more speed and some taller jumps.

Not problem. Just watch the back wheels, the faster you hit the jump the more they want to come up.

clemsonteg
03-23-2010, 08:44 AM
yeah I have been practicing on a small jump, its probably only 4 foot high and I am probably only about 2 feet in the air, but the object is to control my throttle and then I usually goose the throttle at the very edge to put the front end up a little bit.

Hey guys. It's finally coming back together. The frame is at the painter and should be done one week from today. The engine guy is planning on having the engine back to me the same day.

In the mean time, my paint scheme goes as follows:
Frame: One shade off of Massey Furgeson Red (Almost Maroon.)
Swinger: Matching frame
Subframe: Matching frame
Bottom Arms: Matching frame
Engine Braces and misc: Matching frame.

Top Arms: Black
Oil Tank: Black
Steering stem: Black
Hubs: Black
Clutch/Starter covers: PC'd stealth.

BUT I do have one question
I am not willing to split the cases just for the sake of getting them PC'd. So if I want them black I am going to have to paint them. Is it worth panting the center case and jug? The side cases are going to be PC'd so it won't rub off there. I just want it all to match.

Here is a pic of everything in the back of the truck.

Did you decide on color for your cylinder/head? Or are you leaving it?

I am going to polish it like I did my center case. I think I'm going to paint or PC the vave cover to match the cases though.

I jumped from page 1 to page 7...

I was going to ask you about handlebars...

But first I gotta say I am impressed on page 7...

You have it looking really good right here...

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j245/jerry42633/Powersports/Photo0133.jpg

Are you going to yellow plastics over that?

OK, now I am going to ask about bars...

Any idea what bend either set is???

Input on why you changed them?

I am going back with red plastics... maybe black plastics in the future. I tried to keep with a red/black scheme. Plus funds have kind of fizzled out with this thing. I lost track of the money I had into it at 4.5K :scary:

As for the bars. The ones on it right now are Renthal 747s I think. They are close to a CR high bend. Old ones were still the high bend I believe. The only reason I changed is I found these bars for cheap, and the old ones were getting into bad shape. (Previous owner had hid his head hard enough on the barpad to where it was bent. :p And the paint was peeling.)

So yeah, it was mainly for comfort and cosmetic reasons. I got the barpad for $15 and I liked it better than the stock one. I hope that answers your question.

In the future I'd like to get a lower bend with an extended stem- that setup is much more comfortable for someone my size.
_______________

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I'll push it outside tomorrow and try to get the completed pictures.

Good call on keeping the Black/Red scheme, putting yellow plastics over this beauty might be way too much Big Bird / Ronald McDonald for me.....

Looking forward to seeing it finished

I would love know where 4.5k went? I could build a MX ready quad for that much.... :eek2:

2K to buy the quad.
$500 in engine parts (piston, rings, valves, cam, etc.)
$350 for engine work (P&P, 5* valve job, etc.)
$150 for FCR carb
Literally $50 in jets
$450 for paint and PC
$350 for Laeger arms
$120 for balljoints
$150 for 450R shocks
$150 for LSR axle
$150 for SS brake lines
$75 for exhaust work
$55 for EHS lid
$60 for K&N filter
$44 for cam chain
$60 for wheel bearings
$~40 in nickel and dime parts.
____

That comes out to $4754... those are just the things I can remember off the top of my head.

Granted, I did make a lot of mistakes.. I could have gotten better deals and less headaches at many points during this build.

Btw, I'm trying to steer this one in the direction of MX. ;)

This will by my final post in this thread.

The quad is done as of May 19th, 2011. After over a year. (Actually it's been completed for a while, it just took me awhile to get the brakes right. :blah: ). There's been quite a few hangups, such as accidentally giving my head to a registered felon :eek2:, but it all worked out.

A special thanks to NacsMXer, honda400ex2003, and rubbersdown for all the expertise. And a huge thank you to IMSROLL450R, he really jumped in there awhile back to help a fellow rider out. I appreciate it more than words can express.

Anyway, here is the progress. I like it, but I hate my plastic, nerfs, and bumper.

What do you guys think? Also, how much do you think the quad is worth now?
Thanks!

i love it man. And im with ya on the nerfs and front bumper, not my first choice to put it nicely lol.

I hate my plastics too. when i bought the quad almost every tab was broke on it and the seat doesnt sit on it correctly but i am dragging my feet about spending the money for new plastics.

Thanks! I hate everything DG makes lol. I am also very hesitant to spend money on nerfs and plastic. Not sure if I want to sell the quad and get 450 or pump even more money into this one.

Anyone have an estimated value on it now?
