I just bought a stage 2 hotcam and i am wondering if it is necessary to get a aftermarket cam chain?

id put a crf450 chain in it just for insurance and check ur tensioner to make sure its good. got my chain off ebay for 26 shipped

it is if your old one is wore out, the cam chain is down deep in the crank case you at least have to take off tensioner, the right side case cover which has the supply and return oil lines and the clutch cable just to get to it and then you have to fish the new one in unless you take off the head and jug + about 60-80 $ in gaskets.


To check your chain for wear take it off and compare it to new one,sounds like alot of trouble doesnt it.

Id only replace if it was worn BUT if you were down there anyways (ex. piston change) I would do it for piece of mind.

Should never have to take the head off to change a timing chain. At most the rocker box and clutch side cover. You only need 2 gaskets to do the job that costs less then $15 total from Honda ($20 if you don't shop around).

Wish I would have known this before. I just changed my cam in my 450! And probably bought the cheap one.

The stock 450 chain in the 450 is fine. You can use a CRF450 chain in the 400ex for a cheap upgrade.
