xl650 swap

First i want to introduce my self ,ive been registered for a year and have read some pretty good stuff and have read some BS.
I am a welder /fabricator who has been around since the hot new setup was front suspension on the atc185s.
My question is has anbody ACTUALLY done the xl650 swap ,if so how did it go? Ive heard about everybodys brotherinlaw or guy at the track , or story on the net, but i just want to hear from somebody who has done it or at least seen it in person.

are'nt the xr-l and xl models street legal? i have heard the trnny gears are too tall for this. i would try an xr 600r or xr650r. sorry, this is not what you wanted, but, i try to atleast say what i heard because most people i talk too know more than me.

There was a test in dirtewheels where they put an XR600 engine in a 400ex frame a few months ago, if it helps or not.
