I am considering a DRR for my son's first atv. He will be 5 this December. What I am wondering is if I should start him on a 50 or 70. At our local track they race all 50's and 70's together. With the exception of a couple PAMX races this is how most of our racing would be. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

With the way these run, you want to stay with a 50. even though they are the same size machine wise the power difference is pretty big. The DRR 50's are pretty fast. Once he gets good on his 50 all you need to do to upgrade it to a 70 is buy a new cylinder.

I would go for the 70 and use the throttle screw to regulate the speed you want him to go JMO:macho

The 2010 DRX50 will have a new cylinder and pipe and should be quicker than previous years out of the box.

Upgrading the 50 to the 70 is easily done, so I would go with the 50 due to the age factor.

It is always better to spend a little more later then to put the rider in harms way. JMO

I let my boy race his 50cc DRR for a year when he was 6 and then the following year just bought a 70 cylinder kit. It was easy to do and a used stock 70 cylinder is cheap or an aftermarket cylinder has that extra power.

I'd go with the 50...

I'd say 50cc as well.

Im in this boat right now as well. My plan is to by my daughter a 70 (44" wide and longer) then Im putting a 50 cylinder and piston in it so we then have then wider/longer quad then Ill upgrade her later when she moves to the 70 class. Other wise Ill be looking to widen her 41" 50 and thats not the rout3 I want.
You should check the rules for your kids class to make sure she can run over 41" wide as ATVA rules for 50 limited are 41" width/length. My girl will run the production class which allows a wider quad.
There my 2 cents.
