According to the eBay listing,

"AMR's newest Stage 3 rev box for the Honda 400ex not only increases the rev limiter found in the stock CDI unit, it has the most Aggressive Timing Curve possible, built in. The Stage 3 box will give the 400ex better throttle response vs the AMR Stage 2 (and most other CDI units on the Market). Stage 3 is recommended if Exhaust / Air modifications are installed or if you plan on adding them in the future."

I guess the Stage 3 increases the rev limit to 1200 RPMs over the 750-1000 RPM increase you get with the Stage 2. My question is, are the gains between the two going to be that significant? The Stage 3 is selling for $89 while the Stage 2 is only $35. They also have combo packages that includes both a CDI box (Stage 2 or 3) and a Monster Coil. Or you can buy the coil separately for $69. The coil is supposed to give 34% more energy to the spark plug and increase the throttle response further.

So, what should I do? It'd be $145 for the Stage 3 + the coil and $105 for the Stage 2 + the coil.

I'd just buy the monster coil. I think the rev boxes are a waste of money. You really dont have that much hp. when you hit the rev limiter with the stock cdi.

Interesting.

What about the MSD Enhancer Ignition Kit? (http://www.msdpowersports.com/atv_honda400ex.html)

Let me know if you can find one online. I emailed MSD asking where I can find one.

So far the only one I have found is this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370281393025&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

The fact that the listing says this,

"This is a MSD Enhancer Ignition system for the Honda TRX 400EX quad ATV.

Please note that this unit may require additional parts that are not included to work with your vehicle, this only includes the ignition box and wiring as shown in the photos. Consult MSD for installation information."

kinda scares me, though.

Kinda wondering the same thing. Stage 2 or stage 3

The general consensus says that neither are worth it. There just isn't enough HP available at the higher RPMs unlocked to make it worthwhile. The coils, however, are supposed to give you a hotter spark and help with cold starts and whatnot.

Take that $145 and buy a HotCams Stage 1 cam and an OEM XR400R head gasket and you'll see way more difference than with any CDI. A cam and a head gasket can be done in a matter of a few hours with just basic hand tools and a torque wrench, and you'll be much happier with the results. Just my $0.02.

i agree with you but i already had a stage one cam, full exhaust i needed the jet kit so i figured i buy the moose kit which was 110 then sold the cdi for 50
you do see a difference weather its worth it is up to the person i think it is when you got everything else
