Hey Guys,
I am interested in building a hybrid for my son. I am thinking of using an 85cc engine from a dirtbike (cr, yz, etc.) for power but am wondering what would be the best rolling chassis to use. I have located what appears to be a nice banshee but i am thining that it might be too big or heavy. What do you think would be a good option.

Thanks

A Blaster frame would be a good start. But of course the kids probly gonna hit a growth spurt. I outgrew my Blaster quick when I was 12-13.

If ya got the dough, see if you can't find a used 90 mod race quad.

He will be 13 in January, 5' 4" and 120 lbs with gear. I would love to be able to buy a 90 mod but I can't swing that. I would like to buy a roller and a dirt bike and do a transplant. What are your thought on a bike for a kid this size?

Thanks

5'4" 120 isn't too small for a big bike chassis, and he will be 13... I would honestly say get a 250R or a 450R chassis, I see some rollers on the 250R part of the forum for sale.

But I was going to say if you go that route don't mod the frame too much, or at all besides bolt on mods to get the motor to fit, so you can eventually put the original motor for that frame in it when he turns 16... something a lot of people don't think of.

He will grow into the big bike chassis by the time he's 14 anyways too. I was racing a 250R when I was 14, but I was 5'10" 160. And it wasn't sanctioned, so age/displacement didn't matter.

Thanks for the info guys. What price range should I expect to pay for a good roller? 300 to 800 or so? I am sure that I would pay more with aftermarket suspension stuff.

I think a 300ex would be a good start. They can be very cheap and with the right mods, handle quite well.

A complete older 300ex can be bought for $300-$500 sometimes.

A lot of people will disagree but at 5'10" I still feel comfortable on a 300ex. The bars could be a couple inches further away, and it definitely needs to be wider and longer, but otherwise comfortable.

I find there are more parts available too because all the honda parts interchange - 400ex a-arms, shocks and I believe stem. 250R and 350X swingarms can be adapted.

i agree with the 300ex. parts are dirt cheap and there is room to put a radiator and a bigger engine in the future. people put 125cc 2 strokes and the 250f 4 stroke in that chassis.

Thanks for the info guys. Keep the good info coming. I like to have a plan before I get started. Does anyone know how long the shocks are for a the 300EX? I have found that shocks are one of the major expenses on quads. I just bought nice Elkas for his current bike last winter but I am guessing they won't fit the 300.

he is on a 90cc DRR with long travel shocks. For some reason, I thik that the front shocks are 13.5 inches and the rear is about 12 inches. But it has been a while, so i could be off by1 to 6 inches!!

You can also get the 300EX and go with shock relocating mounts to use 250R a-arms, and mod it to use a 250R rear end.

haha! idont know if that would work... take very good care of the quadhes on and i know kids like to bear the **** out of stuff but i think if you sell that you would beable to take a bugger quad(250r 400ex 450r yzf kfx450 ltr) and put a 250f or 125 in it...

mojave are extremely heavy. even with a smaller motor.
