Are the 400ex calipers really so bad that people go back to running the old 250r calipers? Im not looking for stoppies, just brakes! I have a full front end of a 400ex should i use the 400 calipers or the 250 with adapters?

i personally am not a fan of the 400ex brakes. they are single piston and just dont stop well enough for the way i ride.

i agree. I race XC and hated my 400ex calipers. I just bought a whole 450r front end and im happy again. I have a set of 250r calipers, spindles w/hubs and 400ex calipers, spindles w/hubs if your interested.

is the difference that noticeable?

about like going from drum to disc or standard oem lines to stainless braided. day light en dark in comparison.

very noticable difference. The only reason i changed away from the 250r calipers was i changed front ends, and the 400ex spindles came with it. The 250r brakes are better, front and rear

can you put 250r calipers on a 400 spindle?

would they be bad with full stainless steel braided lines and a full rebuilt kit? Better than squishy stockers? mine you pull the lever all the way to the bar and the tires dont even lock up on dirt roads...

i guess s/s lines on the 400ex calipers would be better than nuttin' but i'd opt to put 450r calipers on 'nar.

i actually used a yz400 rear caliper on my 250r because the 250r rear caliper so over priced.

I have 400ex front calipers with SS lines, good fluid and no air in the system. They stop just fine for me. I guess they could be a little stronger but for the way I ride, just play and trail, they work fine.

I would rather have a dual piston set up in the front but when I was looking for parts for mine, everyting I found was way over priced and I just happen to pick up the 400 parts dirt cheap so that is what is on mine for now.

My rebuilt front 250r brakes stop better than a new quad. There is very little lever pull and they lock up, but when I release, the brakes don't drag either. ITS PERFECT!! My rear brakes still need a rebuild though, they're a little too squishy. My front brakes have spoiled me....

So, I vote rebuild! If you rebuild them make sure you clean around the o-ring grooves. The o-rings being the ones that scrub the side of the caliper pistons. That'll help the pistons retract easier when you let off the lever and keep your brakes from dragging.

I switched from 400ex to 250r calipers on my hybrid(400ex spindles). I got a caliper adapater to do it and the brakes were far better, why did I wait so long to do so????

When I bought my R it had the stock 250r calipers with Galfer s/s lines. Really liked them. I had worn spindles, so I found a complete NACs 400 ex setup. Love the setup, but don't care for the single piston 400 ex brakes. Not nearly as good as the stock 250r setup. Still running the Galfer lines, they don't compare to dual piston setup.

I have a set of adapters for the brakes if anyone wants to buy a set.

Do 450R calipers work on either 400EX spindles or 250R spindles?

Thanks and sorry to go on a tangent.
