So I bought 2 laptops within the last 2 months and both coem with the free Windows 7 upgrade now that it is available. Currently both laptops are running Vista .

Has anyone started using Windows 7 yet? I have to get ahold of Toshiba to have them send me the copies and they said it'll take 6-8 weeks. Just wondering in the Windows 7 is worth upgrading to.

Apparently it is supposed to be good for laptops... with vista all of your RAM is used on ALL programs that are running, regardless if they are in the foreground. With Windows 7, it "focuses" more RAM for a program running in the foreground, and dedicates less to one running in the background.

Should help to make most laptops a little bit speedier!

My home computer is running Vista, but it's a Quad core and has 8GB of Ram so there isn't any point really in me paying to upgrade.

If someone offered me a free copy I'd take it though!

I just bought 2 dells and got the free upgrade. i should have the upgrade dvd for it this week and ordered it this friday all free of charge. Might be the same with toshiba

Check this out

And its supposed to run much faster then vista. and has some cool new features. I hear its night and day over vista. but xp still runs better

I was able to get windows 7 for free through my college, they have some program with microsoft, so I had the install disc that I had to burn after downloading it for a few weeks before the official release. Because I didn't want to lose the programs I still needed I waited until last Thursday since I was done with one program and I was going home where my microsoft office disc is. I was only able to get the professional version, I had home premium before, through my college so I had to do a clean install. I have been very happy so far with windows 7 and I haven't had many problems with it. Just a lot of updates and downloading drivers.
The only major issue I've had has been with word 2007, I'm not sure if I had the problem before windows 7, but the spell checker is horrible. I barely finds anything and the things it did weren't really errors.

Windows Vista is the biggest pain in the *** to use. Windows 7 is by far the best Windows made so far.

switch to that and then tell me that.

Windows 7 is worth EVERY dollar to pay for it. I have been on board with it for about 10 months now (Worked with the beta and the release canidate) and I absolutly love it. I have the RC still installed as I am waiting for my copy to show up. Anyone who is running vista and expects to keep their computer for atleast another 2 years, do yourself a favor and go out and buy it.

It depends on what version they send you. If u can upgrade it then it should but other wise only a fresh install will work but just save ur data to a flash drive or something and install it

You were obviously never told not to speak about topics you know nothing about...

Greg - short answer, Yes - upgrade to 7 and ditch Vista.

Vista will be upgraded to 7 in my house. Actually I will be doing clean installs using the 64bit OS...

I surely hope 7 is better than Vista. Getting a simple HP printer driver loaded and working was a nightmare on my brother's Vista PC. Had to load it about 4 times without changing anything during the process and it finally just took and started working.

So that's why I have error messages on my two laptops when I try shutting them down. Flashes an error box that I have to click OK and comes up with HP soemthing as the error. :ermm:

The Driver support is crazy good we installed it on 4 computers so far the only one we had to do a driver for was my video card on my laptop. Printers, Finger Print scanners, scanners, everything has worked right out the box i was stunned! I have all brand new HP printers and 7 has the drivers for them all! This is the death of Macs! lol

Start of a all new windows experience...yes.

Like i said before. If you are planning on keeping your pc for at least another two years, go get Windows 7.

I'm no computer genius but I kinda know my way around them. I would definitely upgrade. I'm still using XP right now because of all the problems with Vista. My friend works at a computer shop and he says it's great. He's where I get all my knowledge so I'll definitely be upgrading soon.

the MSDN program is how I got mine. I don't know if they have other versions available at other schools, but the professional version was the only option I had.

7 Pro is installing on my desktop now. With my new laptop I dont even use it much anymore so we will see how it goes. I am mainly concerned with 64 bit support for MatLab and SolidWorks.

How does the MSDN program work? I tried looking up a website for it and I think I found it, but couldnt find out how to actually be able to get a program.

I've been running the different Betas of Windows 7 now for about 6 months now. Windows 7 is actually more based on XP than Vista... That is, that they took the best parts of XP (stability, etc) and the best parts of Vista (visual effects, etc) and put them together on a newly built from the ground up platform. This is the first OS where Microsoft programmed with the "security built in" mindset.

Windows 7 has some cool visual effects and features on the top, but is built solidly underneath. It boots faster, runs faster, and uses less resources than Vista.

I tri-boot Ubunty 9.04, Vista Ultimate, Windows 7 Ultimate RC 7100,

I have XP mode in 7, Backtrack 4 PR, RedHat, and Solaris on Virtual Drives in Windows 7. So I'm familiar with OS's as I do Digital Forensics.

Windows 7 actually reminds me a lot of Ubuntu in how it feels like it has a low overhead. It's quick and easy to use, but it would be cool to have multiple desktops like Linux has.

You must be in an IT related program to get it and so many years in i think. Just ask your school and they will tell you if they have it.

All you need is a .edu email address.

Not totally true. Most major universities aren't on the list for who can get it. Only more minor ones. I go to UNLV but I can't get it. It doesn't even think my .edu address is a real email address.

Microsoft has their own discount program where you can get pro for like 40 bucks.

At Penn State, apparently engineering students get into the MSDN program now too. Last time i was in it i was taking a computer science class.

For everyone else who already has Windows 7. Here is our Wednesday Wallpapers in an easy to install package.
