i was looking at thoes from lsr. the only thing i dont like about the sprocket guard is that is adds weight to the rotating mass and it robs power. i'll proly just get the rotor guard bc it's wayy less expensive than a rotor.

On 400ex's the sprocket gaurd hits the sub frame. You have to modify the sub frame to put one on.

GT Thunder just came out with a skid that gives you maximum ground clearance.

http://www.gtthunder.com/ATVParts.htm I had an Armadillo like that. Keep the spacers because when you adjust the chain you'll need to drop the skid down.

You have to modify the subframe if you run a GT Thunder Link anyway. So this is not a problem with this setup

That's the first '05-up EX I've seen that I like the looks of.

Must be the fact it sits more right and I guess the hood and shrouds too...

Very nice bike.

I don't see why you guys won't just buy a PRM rear skid?

Max clearance, more protection area, and more.

Yeah, if you get the one I have, you might have to notch for a GT Thunder link

that was prm skid...

Beautiful quad!!

Oil City, huh?? I go up that way every June to fish the Allegheny. We stay in a campground in Kennerdell called Marlowes. You know where that is?? Hows the riding up that way?? Maybe I'll bring my quad next time :p

that was a Pro Armor skid.

10-18-2009, 12:32 AM
i figured that out after i looked at the pic...that notch cut out of the rear was the give away...it was your 450r that had the prm...

Can you post some pics of how you modded your subframe?

Thanks,
Dustin

all you have to do is bend the subframe out some. its not a big deal. you are suppose to do it when you use the GT Thunder link anyway.

And I would of rather used a prm skid but I figured since I had this pro armor hunk of scrap I would experiment with it first

I can see that.

I can also see your opinion of Pro Armor rear skids. I really do not care for mine on the KFX. Kills my clearance because it has soooo much room between it and the sprocket and rotor. It's probably needed though, because I am not sure Pro Armor uses the grade of material PRM does.

It has some gouges in it already, from minor low speed scrapes, where as my PRM has just some scratches from several major bolder smacks at speed.

hey im in the process of shopping now for a prm skid (heard noting but good sutff) i was wondering would it be better to get the .190 or the .250.im not so much worried about weight but if anyone has had problems with .250 cracking. bending the skid inst a problem ill just beat it back to shape but since its thicker metal does it give out or just break. any input would help

Lonestar_R

I would do the .250. Never had any problems with them

MtnEX
10-18-2009, 08:46 PM
I bought the .250 for my 400EX.

I have not been able to hurt it.

10-19-2009, 06:38 AM
i would only run a .250...and as far as prm goes...they are good, but expensive...at least compared to armadillo skids...armadillo swinger skids only come in .250 thickness, are about 80ish shipped and are just as good as tghe prm...they just don't have as pretty of a finish...but who cares, it is on the bottom and gets beat up anyway, so why pay the extra cash for pretty when pretty gets ruined

looks like the hammer will visit that skid often.

lonestar_R, will that skid plate fit a stock 400ex swingarm? it looks like your swingarm has an extra set of mounts in the back.

Lonestar_R
12-05-2009, 06:25 PM
It is a LSR Swingarm for a 400EX but I had the extra mounts welded to it

thanks. and got one more question for you, how thick is that lonestar sprocket guard? I know they make some up to 3/8ths thick. how is that one holding up for you? cause im needing to get one here soon, they got em for fairly good deals on ebay.

Lonestar_R
12-14-2009, 10:36 PM
This LSR is Stainless and very very tough. Its only about 1/8" thick and will take a beating. I bet you can't hardly tell its been used. Its that tough

12-19-2009, 04:09 PM
well I got one of these LSR sprocket guards off ebay for about 30$ shipped. I got a few more questions for ya Lonestar. did you have to use longer sprocket bolts? im assuming you did, and i'll probably have to impervise with something in my shop untill I can get the correct bolts for it. and my other question is what kind of rear brake setup are you using? cause im planning on getting a 450r rear brake setup and a 36
T rear sprocket to get the most out of my ground clearance. and did you have to bend out the sub frame rail quite a bit for the sprocket guard to clear??

Lonestar_R
12-19-2009, 04:18 PM
Yes I had to use longer bolts. I went to Fastenal and got what I needed. I am just using a stock rear brake setup for now. I believe I will be going to the Blingstar setup eventually with a 450R caliper. I can't see going to a 36 sprocket because your sprocket guard will still be as big. But that is up to you.
