lol not what your expecting, i do alot of used parts and salvage and we just usually scrap these because there is no resale and not enough of a demand for parts....anyhow me and my buddies race snow ovals for fun in the winter...we all throw in $ and it goes to the winner 250 cc 4 stroke and no studs...so i been building this 84 lt 185:p im trying to keep the budget under $300
anyway heres a before pic...not the actual quad...the one i started with was worse conditin but it will give u the basic idea
i think when i measured wheel to wheel it was 28 inches wide...LOL and they dont come with front brakes....gas tank is beside the 1 rear wheel...and they push in corners like theres no tomrorow
this wasnt the most ideal quad to build but i figured it would be pretty unique
first thing i junked the a arms, fitted a set off a 87 250x...gain 9 3/4 inches of width , disc brakes, and since there off the 87 i can adjust the camber....i used shocks off of a quad sport 230, the challenge was the frame rail runs between the arms along with the tie rod so travel is limited which is fine for running ovals...i also put the 185 motor on my shelf and cut the main down tube had it rewelded....poorly (really have to get welding down myself) along with the rear and made the motor mounts to bolt in a suzuki 230 e quadsport motor....electric start auto clutch ....also these things got no rear suspension...simple to work on no power loss to the suspension and it sits low...also relocated the tank up to by the bars using a xr 50 tank....
spray painted everything... this is as far as i am...bumper and front end off 250x
ill add a few more pics as i go...should be pretty unique i think im gonan setup dual fmf silencers on it :p

Sweet you're using some LT230E parts! We had a 230S Quadsport and a 230E Quadrunner. Here's a pic from the late 80's of me on our Quadracer and we were letting my cousin ride our Quadrunner.

Man that is going to be very unique and interesting. Look forward to see where this project goes.
I remember these quads when they first came out. I never owned one but I rode several of the different models. LOL they did push in the corners. In fact from a dead stop you could turn the bars and stab the throttle and it would just go straight and then eventually turn, LOL.

as did i
got it for 600$ and rode the piss out of it for 3 months till the tranny went south
i ended up selling it for 20$ to a salvage shop about 6 months ago after we got it running, cut the exhuast off with a sawzall, and then let it sit for about 3 years:p
rear end is in , got the new tires mounted...u can see the xr 50 tank i have mocked up
gotta find some tie rods and get the steering hooked up, throw the steel braided lines on then ill be waiting on parts
u can see the bar risers witht he far bars...looks crazy but it not high at all...thing is the xr 50 tank sits on the dash...so im throwing on some ktm orange xr 50 shrouds, and a xr 50 number plate on the front of the risers/ stem so it doesnt look so awkward...im a ways away from that but ive been brain storming.... i just mocked the cosmetics up to get a idea...they will look much better next time you see them....nd u can see the difference in width

dude that thing is sooo bad ***!!!! keep us up dated dude
well chassis is done with working brakes...finishing my motor mounts tomorrow...got the steel braided lines on and my denton steering damper on:scary:
all the parts are stuff i had laying around, except for a few things, i definetely didnt buya $125 works clutch lever for a rear brake lever if thats what your thinking, should have the motor bolted in tomrorow, then its just finishing alot of odds and ends
well made some more progress have to finish some wiring, waiting on some parts...i scrapped the stock plastics for some z 400 ones i had to do alot of modifying to the seat and sidepanels and rear fenders but i got them mounted, motors in..fmf pipe is on..about a week and i should be done
heres another ...plastics arent fastened by seat thats why it looks a bit off

thats so cool how you did all that stuff lol. makes me want to do something like that!! are those the tires you are running? figured they would be sort ot heavy for a 230cc motor. cant wait to see the final project running! very neat!

yeah there the ones im gonna run there only 22's, 4 ply , 230 puts out around 14 hp which isnt far off of a 300ex, we usually run in about 4-6 inches of fresh snow so i need the clearance and there isnt much in that size in 2 ply so i was kind of screwed lol, thanks for all the comments , it will be looking alot better finished, ill be glad to finally get it done haha

One of the best tires I've ever used in the snow were std 20" holeshots. Just awesome. We had really good luck with 22" all-tracs (older maxxis tires), but they needed a lot of power to turn. We used them on an LT500.

you don't have a stator for a 125cc one do you? would the 185 one work maybe?? mines not getting spark
One_Bad_400
11-10-2009, 04:05 PM
i thought ya'll tried to get the stator out but it stripped or something. or was that the 3-willer?
oh ya and ben... DeSoto Central's band director got caught bumpin uglies with a 17 year old band nurd in snowden grove!!! HAHAHAHAHA
im not 100% sure but i think the 185 and 125 are basically the same motor, id guess the ignition system would interchange, only diff is the 125 doesnt have front suspension and uses a 428 chain other than that there isnt too much difference, i beleive the pistons and cranks are diff
more often than not if there not getting spark its a bad spark plug cap or wire

it would be insane!!!! i think first add suspension keepin the 125 in and then maybe find somethin bigger later .. hunter do you still have any old a-arms off the z's or anything? any cut up frames?
One_Bad_400
11-11-2009, 04:06 PM
nope =/ dont wana use my 450r arms. we'll just have to build some insane long travel!!!
naw i dont, we sold the motor out of it last week
a cr 500r is a bit excessive for even a hardtail LOL

dude you should get some vids of that thing running it would be awesome!
got a bit further still have alot of finish up, floorboards...shifter etc

those things are pro =p ...look at the build im going threw at the moment its in the 300ex form
ignore me in the background:p
rode it today decent power...too much for the wheelbase , need to make some front end adjustments , shifting is a royal pain , but overall its fun
last one, pretty drastic diff , before and aftrer

That's pretty sweet! Quad of the Month stuff there HAHAHA
Only thing different I would have done, get some mini nerfs off a 90 or something and fab them on. I'm sure it wouldn't have been to hard to "makeshift" something for it. STILL a pretty nice looking... "whatcha-ma-kall-it" :D
Toadz400
11-23-2009, 08:58 AM
Ha, that's awesome. I used to rock an '84 LT185 back in the day and my parents still have it.
i would of done nerfs but i was paralyzed last august racing mx, so i need something to keep my foot from getting run over, i tried fitting some nerfs but i would of had to do extensive stuff to them to get them to do what i needed and there aluminum and id have to pay for the fabrication

the final product looks awesome man! do you have a suicide shifter on it? gonna have to get some video footage for us :D
yeah if u look close youll see it, i have to dial the shifting in better, i cant move my leg out of the way to grab the shifter so it need to go even further ahead for me to grab gears properly, but for ovals i think i should be able to leave it in 3rd and just run it, its suprisingly snappy for a 230, i was impressed
haha i actually entered it in this months qotm :p
heres some pics i threw together to show how drastic of a change ive made, i enjoy builds like this , more so than building a 450

Nice Job! just one thing the tires you got on it weight is 20pds a piece that 40pds in rear that motor is hurting trying to turn those tires Id get lighter tires had them on Z 400 and were just to heavy here,s pics of my $150 budget mini i did for cousins little boy. Before and after

heres the before pic.

heres rear view,Built spacers for all wheels, fixed carb, painted, shaved fenders, new seat cover, new tires, got motor running , its low and wide smaller rear tire ,it a donut ,wheelie machine and handles awesome now.would love to find some more mini,s to fix up for kids it was a fun project.
the tires really arent that heavy there a copy of the gbc ones that are 6 ply, these are 4 ply, not too bad, turns them no problem, actually motor isnt lacking whatsoever, only thing lacking is my ability to shift on the fly:p
nice redo btw, i didnt even realize yamaha made a 4 wheel version of the trizinger
John Noftsinger
11-24-2009, 07:59 PM
Just thought they were the 6-ply mud sharks I had ,man they were heavy! its an 86 4-zinger 80cc,s wish i could have done plastics like you did but the kid loved it ,he didn,t even know it was he,s quad when i brought it back ,it was broke down and he didn,t even know it was missing it was a cool b-day surprize for him.Love to do some more old quads if I could find some laying around and just sell them to kids for what a put in them.
weve been doing salvage for yrs thats the first time ive seen a 4 zinger, they must be incredibly rare, i think alot of people give up on he old junkers too soon
