Why would you want to ride with broken parts?? I would fix it before I did any riding just so maybe not to hurt anything else, anyone else or yourself. Typically a machine with a broken part that is continued to run un fixed turns into a snowball effect of problems.

youll tear up the sprockets and possibly the chain too. The bearings will completely fall out and youll have a axle that is like an inch thick rotating in a three inch hole. you very well could crack your swingarm.

Dont do it a new carrier with bearings is like 120 bucks

looks to me like the swinger is Definately cracked,
not just "looks like it's cracked".

you'll end up getting yourself, or someone else... hurt,
if you continue to ride with known broken parts.

not a good idea.

and judging by how dry the chain looks, and no evidence of being lubed,.. it would be my guess that the whole bike could use some TLC.
Might be a good time for a winter tear-down, to see what else could use some attention.

are u sure your carrier and bearings are trashed or is it just the swinger. because if it is just a crack in the swinger and ur real tight on cash and cant afford a new one then you can just have a welder weld the crack. its alluminum. just jack up the back of the bike and make sure ur axle is still tight in the bearings to check them. I know u guys think this is bad advice but when ur poorboyin it u can prolly get away with a repair like that for a few rides or maybe more.

If you do buy a new swinger then buy a used 450r swinger off ebay. You can get em for a hundred bucks or so and they are 1.5 inches longer then the stock 400ex swinger

I had the same thing happen to mine at the beginning of the day. I figured well I can finish out the day with it cracked and replace it later right? Wrong... At the end of the day riding the bearings on that side were gone... chain came off and got bound up against the case... fortunately didn't crack it. Had to push it to the nearest road and pick it up with the truck.

Get a new dual row carrier on ebay for 100 bucks and call it good.

ok thanks for the advice... the only thing that is broke is the piece that u turn to tighen the chain... so i don't think nething else is broke... and yes as soon as snow flies i'm tearing it apart and giving it som TLC... the guy that i got it off of beat the s!$t outta it and never took ne care of it...

and for the swing arm looking cracked it isn't.... trust me i looked at that as soon as i saw the pic...

I can relate to the poor man thing, been there done that.

But I do a lot of work behind the seens and attend a lot of races and I have seen a lot of things happen do to lack of maintenance.
Such as tires fall off, wheels fall off. axels break , ball joints come apart, tie rods bend or break, seats come off. Shocks fall off, pipes fall off, and so on.

The more maintenance you do and the more you keep your ride in good safe working order then the safer and the more fun you'll have. Not to mention getting it fix before it tears up something else.

Just sayin!!!

also keep in mind that the chain is attached in an indirect way to that bearing carrier, and the chain is attached directly to your transmissions countershaft...i can almost guarantee if you keep riding it, your countershaft bearing housing inside your crankcase will end up looking like this...just not worth it

that is a bummer... i'm not riding it till i get it fixed now... i picked up the back end and then shifted the wheels... feels like there is no pressure on the axle at all...

Well you picked a sport where it's very important to keep things in good working order for safty reasons. Remember your life can be on the line if you dont.

You did the right thing in finding out what to do and I see you are gettin it fixed. In your case if I wanted to putt around the yard till the parts come in thats cool but no hard ridding.

Once the bearing starts to go out it gose quick.

It's a bummer bing broke down but it's a good time to go over the whole thing while your waiting on parts.
