nope you use a base plate when running a long rod with a 86 style piston.

correct..... and when using a stroker crank.

there are several ways of seizier.... 4 corner cold seize, overheat seize, lean, detonation.... ect ect. if you'll do a search you should turn up plenty of pics.

i read somewhere that you could use a 3mm spacer plate and run a 86 yz 250 piston.

i think i have a 5 mm spacer plate! hope this works out.. main reason i ask is i found a 86 motor and it needs a piston. i have a good piston and cyl and i had a base plate with a hot rods crank shaft... it was a 88 89 cyl... if things pan out like i would like all i would need is a clutch kit... fibers and steels...

Yes 86 is a short rod and 87-89 is a long rod.

if you are running a 85-86 bottom end, with a long rod (87-89) crank, you need an 85-86 cylinder and piston with 5mm spacer plate. (my current set-up)

If you use a 85-86 bottom end with a long rod crank, you can use
an 87-89 piston with an 87-89 cylinder. (no spacer plate)

Or keep it all 85-86. short crank, 85-86 piston, 85-86 cylinder

thanks moss! i think i would have OEM 86 bottom end.... i have the 88 cyl and a 5 mm base plate with a stock bore piston... i'll get a pic of the piston so i know what year or kind it is....

thanks!
