my 400ex seems to be slowing down a-lot. I believe it is a bad clutch. could it be slipping in the upper gears?? and that is what is causing my mild loss of power??? but i haven't changed the clutches since i have had it and i have had it since '04. the bike itself is an 2000

If the engine revs out fast in the higher gears and doesn't really seem to go anywhere fast, then the clutch is bad.

Or if you can't spin the tires well in 3rd or 4th on loose terrain.

Its really easy to put on in... Stock Honda is the way to go I've been told... but I have a new Barnett and no problems.

Here are the install pics, They helped me a ton, I did a clutch swap 2 weekends ago. I have little mechanical skills and tools and I didn't even swear once :D

on the 2nd page, I skipped step 2

and the 3rd page, I skipped step 3 and 4

try a compression test to see how strong everything still is...i would think the clutch slipping would be pretty obvious

yeah that may be kinda what it feels like. i see guys out at the track doing like 3rd and 4th gear wheelies and my quad can hardly do one in 2nd gear.

Yup, new clutch time.
Before I got my new clutch I had the same problem. (except it wouldn't wheelie in 3rd)

The engine revs out and you get no wheelie right?

Its clutch time for me too. 1st and 2nd its fine, but 3rd, 4th, and 5th it just starts slipping when I get on it real good.

I'd suggest draining the oil, a new clutch should be soaked in the oil it will be running in. Plus a new clutch deserves new oil. Best idea is not to use synthetic oil, ever. I'm using Regular old Valvoline 10w-40... I read the Shell Rotella 15w-40 is nice oil as well.

You just have to becareful, some people will just grab a bottle of synthetic and pour it in... You have to make sure your using one that is safe for wet clutches... and even then, I wouldn't do it. Dino oil is cheaper, and you can change it more often, for less $$.

I've never used synthetic oils in anything, don't plan on it either.

Belray Thumper is the go!

If you haven't changed oil in a while, now is the perfect time while your getting your hands dirty.

i am not talking about that man. I am looking for some advice on what clutch plates to get. and who makes some good heavy duty clutch springs. Or just everything i would need to replace for just a basic maintenece procedure.

Man if you wanna get a reputation and respect for being a knowledgeable person on this forum please try to take the time to actually spell out words. Oh, good advice though i will probably take heed of it. ( just use correct grammar next time )

oil = Valvoline 10w-40
clutch = Barnett kit or Stock with stiffer springs. (or any clutch kit that DOES NOT have dimpled steel clutch plates, smooth steels only)

And pick up a gasket for the clutch cover as well, about $10. Should be able to get it at the same place as the clutch.

Here's a thread on clutches for you to check out.

Or search the word clutch at the bottom of the 400ex forum here --> http://www.exriders.com/vbb/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=64
