Hi, I have an 03 400ex and I hadnt been riding it for awhile so I decided to get it out. It wouldn't start. I kept cranking on it, choking it, and everything and it just turns over and tries to fire up. My battery went dead so I have the battery charger on it now because it is getting cold outside and I don't want it to freeze and crack. If anyone knows what might be my problem, it would sure help.

Thanks!

my friends parents have a 400 that maybe gets rode 4 times a year. we always have to pull start it behind my 400. typical cold blooded honda check your plug and drain the carb. i had to drain my crf450 if it sat for awhile cause it would flood and then it would start right up.

Ya pull that sucker. Had to pull my trx450r around my hood twice before it would fire because it sat for a while. just keep on it and keep pop'in that clutch.

Mine does it every once in a while. If I realise straight away that she ain't gonna start I hold the throttle open fully and crank till it starts.

PS. don't crank for more than 5 seconds at a time, you'll bugger the starter motor.

Well, I just got pulled around the block and it sounded like it started but it would just crank over and crank over. When I would pull the clutch in, it just died. Released the clutch, did the same thing. crank and crank and crank but wouldnt fire??

being that it is now 2 days since your original post asking for suggestions, are you saying that you now have,...

pulled off the carb,
opened it up,
cleaned it out,
reassembled / reinstalled it,
drained the fuel tank,
refilled with fresh gas,
fully charged your battery,
checked/changed your spark plug,

and you are STILL having the same symptoms, after following all the previous advise?

Just drained the gas, put fresh in and tried to pull start it.

Could be. I'll check it tomorrow. I noticed the oil cooler was pretty muddy too. Wouldn't effect the wheeler starting but how do you guys clean them out
