which oil filter

I just bought a 99' 400ex and wondering what brand of oil filter to use or does it matter? also it says to use 1.96 qts but have heard you can just put in an even 2 qts and you will be fine??? also is that w/ a new filter?

i use emgo or k&n if i have the money to buy them. the emcos are not bad so i usually get those. I also put in an even 2 qts for the fill up. each person has their own preference on filters so you will get a wide range there i think. steve

You can get fram brand filters at walmart. They even come with a free oring for the filter cover. They are just as good as any other filter IMO.

I buy whatever is cheapest from Rocky Mountain when I place an order. The last ones I bought were Tusk. I was running K&N and I don't notice any difference. So I'm just going with the cheap filters from now on.

my walmart doesnt carry 400ex oil filters...lucky you

I believe you have to look in the book for a filter for an xr400. I know many of the honda utes also use the same filter also. My local advance auto sells the fram filters too. They list em for the xr400.
