clutch problem ?

i just bought a new barnett clutch and its not working but im not real forsure about it like when i have it in gear then try to start it with the clutch lever in and im holding the chain because that axle or none of that is in when i crank it over and cant hold the chain it just wants to move when the clutch is suppossed to be engaged
what could be the problem
