i want to make my 400ex faster but i don't have much money. is there any way i can modify the stock pipe to make it faster. i will probably get an k&n airfilter and jets to help out more. any other cheap mods would be helpful.

you can grind out the welds on the head pipe, and romove the choke, adjust the slack in your thumb throttle, and if you want it to handle better flip the front rims

Grind header welds...
http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37901

Aftermarket airfilter...K&N...UNI...and others.

Jets to match filter and exhaust....Don't buy the "Jet Kit" Buy the individual jets that you need. Search the powertrain forum for info on what jets you might need....

Remove the choke...again, search the forum...

Adjust the gearing via sprockets...

Airbox mods are OK if the exhaust has somewhere to go.

after i grind down the welds on the pipe should i rejet the carb or should i wait till i get an airfilter to rejet.

I'd wait for the filter...I don't feel the header mod changes the flow enough, if any, to warrant a jet change.

You also might want to consider a UNI filter...they are less expensive and have a good reputation.

What kind of riding do you do and in what conditions? I prefer the K&N w/ Outerwear.

i ride mainly in open feilds but occassionally(sp) go woods riding and mudding. i was thinking of getting an outerwares airbox lid and a k&n with outerware cover.

Id start by a new filter and no airbox lid or airbox mods..then u can chnage ur gearing around the way u want it...i wouldnt grind the welds, remove the choke,or do anything to the stock pipe .
