View Full Version : Who wants an aluminum rear brake stay plate with 450R caliper mounts?

As some of you may know I have access to a machine shop....

I am thinking of having my 250R brake stay plate copied, in aluminum, and having the caliper mounts spaced for a 450R rear caliper....

Anyone else interested?

If I get some serious interest I may be able to make quite a few.

This way there would be no spacers, no measuring, just installation and enjoyment.

The machine shop is less than 5 miles from me, and I just dropped off another drawing for more tools today. They have fast turnaround and do quality work.

I thought that was a great idea - I'm glad someone has the initiative to make it happen.

I'd be glad to have a new caliper for much less than the Refurbed ones on ebay.

Any chance you think you could get an adapter plate made for 450R brake calipers on 400ex spindles? They already make 250R caliper adapters but new calipers are not available. Using 400ex spindles work great but 450R spindles don't work that great on 250R's.

I'd also run this setup with new spindles, hubs and calipers.

I would be way more interested in adapting 450R front calipers to my Leager T-Pin front end... LOL

I have no idea the front caliper differences, what I would need to make that happen.

Regarding caliper swaps:
I have been researching all night, and all the 450R rear calipers are the same, all years. So are the rear master cylinders. The front calipers changed, I think about 2006. The 2004 front calipers are the ones to have, even the late model 450R owners are converting back to them.

I am not guaranteeing the rear caliper stay plate would be easy, the hardest thing is getting a working drawing. That would literally be half the battle, if someone could get the part into a CAD file for me... That way the shop could just churn them out..

Otherwise we have to reverse engineer the current 250R plate, then space the mounting tabs differently....

I would also be interested. My rear caliper is about toast as it is now.

why dont you just use a stock 450r brake stay?

Why not use a 450R brake stay? - Answers:

#1 Spacers are required for the caliper because of the different offset of the pieces.

#2 The 450R brake rotor carrier is also required, which means ordering a 450R anti-fade system if you need one.

These two things alone make the swap way more expensive than it should be, with little spacers to lose later. The cleanest way is to simply make a custom bracket.

Thanks for the response!

I will know more tomorrow...

Anodizing is possible, I know a guy.... LOL...

Okay guys... This is doable. Lead time on the finished product is good too, but I need to do some measuring after purchasing a caliper.

Preliminary pricing for the adapter plate would be $40. Anodizing is possible, not sure of the additional cost.

My next problem is which caliper to use.

#1 It has to be at least equal to the original 250R caliper, a dual piston design.

#2 I want it to be from a Honda. No inferior brand's parts for me thank you very much.

Choices that come to mind to use on the rear are:
TRX450R Front Caliper
CRF450R Front Caliper

Give me some pros and cons.

My next step is to order the caliper (after deciding which one), then give the bracket and caliper to the machine shop, and wait. I will have him do 20 of these initially.

your killing me now, i have 2 (1 new) 450r rear calipers and ya want to use a front one, lol.

I know, but good points have been made.

Dual Piston Caliper
No Block Off Plate

This would actually be an improvement over the stock 25R caliper, whereas the 450R caliper would be a step backwards.

Use the CRF front caliper.
Mainly because of the block off plate...i cant stand them.
Clean looks for me. Keep me posted and when you need the cash let me know.

Okay... So far we have a few votes for the CRF450R front caliper....

If we decide on this one does anyone have I can use for mock up?

I would be interestd in one just let me know, and let me know what caliper and master cylinder I will need. My stock caliper is toast so I am looking for a different option and this looks and sounds great.

well use a 04 or newer crf450 caliper, there the same part number. 02 and 03 are different from 04 and newer.

why dont you do 1 of each?that would make everyone happy, you could get a count of what everyone wants and make a few extra and that solves the head ache

At this point I am not ready to make more than one. A lot of time and a bit of money will be involved in this project.

Typically what companies do is find the best solution for a problem, and consumers use that. I am confident one choice is better than the other. The "other" forum is doing quite a bit of research, posting pictures of various calipers, etc. This is helping to determine which caliper will work best for our 250Rs.

Hey Deerchopper... Do you know what is different for the pre-2004 CRF450R calipers? Is it in regards to mounting, or piston size, etc?

Thanks!

not a clue, i just went to servicehonda and looked up all the years for the crf450. 02 and 03 the same, 04 and up the same

I LOVED my CRF caliper on my hybrid. So much cleaner than using an ATV one with the block-off plate.

What is your reasoning behind this? My 450R rear set-up works as good or better than the stock 250 stuff did. Plus, the 450R rear caliper is still pretty cheap to buy (not as cheap as they used to be though). And changing pads couldn't get any easier.

If you do have them made for the 450R caliper, I would consider one though. I have a pile of 250R anti-fades sitting around collecting dust.

Here is the deal:

I am selling (parting out) my 250R....

I do have access to a 250R nearby though, but I need a 2004+ CRF450R front brake caliper to figure out the bracket. If someone sends me a caliper, I will figure out the brackets.

They should be reasonably priced too, as I said before. My machine shop contact is only blocks away.

Your call guys, depends on how bad you want it...

We are done with quads and riding dunes. I cannot afford it, nor was it in the best interests of our family.

I bought a KDX220R, and my kids now have a KX65, and a CRF50.

We trail ride together.

The dunes were all about me, and how fast I could go, while they idled around camp. Trail riding is all about them, watching them grow and learn, and just enjoying the time.

LOL.... Just came to my senses after $50k in credit card debt going dune riding for 3 years straight, rebuilding engines after every two rides because of problems, etc...

No doubt in my mind thatquads are more expensive to operate than dirtbikes.
