What is the best clutch in your opinion...
I'm deciding what to buy for my new 416ex that has a slipping clutch in it.

Barnett
EBC
Or other?

i use dp clutches in my banshee and my 400ex.They seem to be the best for me.They are a little expansive but well worth the money. But that is my opinion

OE Honda fibers and steels are the only way to fly, IMO.

I seen the 7 and 8 plates
But I'm confused on what to order if I end up ordering hinson.

I forgot all about hinson, for a while there I thought they only made clutch baskets

Don't I need a steel plate kit and a fiber plate kit?

I see two 7 plate, one fiber one steel.
and only one 8 plate fiber...no steel.

Does that mean I would need an 8 plate fiber and a 7 plate steel?
(and a spring kit as well)

Stock....by a long shot :o

Couple the stock fibers/steels with some HD springs and full Hinson clutch components and you have the ultimate clutch setup period.

Aren't the stock clutches designed for a lower amount of horsepower?

Seems like they would not be able to handle the extra power very well as they were designed with a less powerful / slower reving engine.

I'm all ears, :ermm:

Stock clutch plates wear the longest. I haven't seen any aftermarket set that does any better in that aspect. The only problem is the holding capacity before it starts to slip with higher HP motors. You have that, and wear of other pieces b/c they are made from cast aluminum.

That is where heavy duty springs, 8 plate clutch kits (adding one extra fiber/steel), and billet clutch components come into play. You take the OEM Honda plates (which wear the longest), add much more holding capacity over stock, plus almost indestructible clutch baskets, pressure plates, inner hubs (Hinson anyone?) and you get the best of everything.

Here is my complete Hinson 8 plate setup with Honda plates. This is the expensive way to go if you want the best of the best. Sparks Racing and GT Thunder make good 8 plate kits if you want similar results for much cheaper.

I had a modded banshee once, that thing was nasty after a Barnett clutch... so nasty it broke teeth off of both sprockets front and rear (mostly the rear, maybe 10 teeth missing) and rounded all of the teeth on the rear sprocket. :eek2:

AHHH, I think I might have found a winner...

$212 for a pretty well designed 8 plate kit

Which is better?
Does a kit that includes a new inner pressure plate make it a better kit? and why?

$147 shipped - Sparks 8 plate - This kit will fit into your stock basket or into an aftermarket (like Hinson) stock sized clutch basket

or

$212 w/ a new inner pressure plate
that has been machined to provide clearance for the extra plates.

also can a stock 7 plate system out perform an 8 plate system?

I guess the sparks 8 plate system is prone to breaking discs?

1fst400 and Trailrider400ex both broke 2...

Well I wanted to ride bad sunday so I went and got a clutch from Magic racing. Went Barnett, no more slippage.

Now I can see how fast the quad really is...
It's ok, no problems doing a 5th gear wheelie down the road... but it is geared down quite a bit so....

If anyone needs a clutch, Id say Barnett is ok to go with.
After the install I really rode hard to see if I could make it slip... no dice! :D

We'll see how long it holds up... if it slips soon I'll be going GT Thunder 8 plate for sure.

STOCK HONDA... Thats what East Coast ATV even used on their race bikes.. And a few other big race/motor build companies told me the same. And being I lasted 7 years on the orignal steel n fibers after how bad I beat that bike up.. Orig honda clutch is the only way to go. And I had a friend who tried dirt(something) and they only lasted less than a year.

Your friend probably tried the "dirt digger" clutch by Barnett. Decent clutch, but just doesn't hold up as long as stock.
