hey guys im a softmore in high school and im a little tight on cash as you could imagine. i recently bought a 2001 400ex and mods are

fmf titanium 4 slip on
j.e piston
ac nerf bars
rental fat bars
and upgraded air filter
maxxis tires

im wanting to get some more horsepower without getting into the engine. I was told a custom intake with a k&n filter would do the job

how do i make it?

do i take the air box out?

what tubing is best?

any help would be greatly Appreciated :)

p.s does anyone have some pics of there custom intake?

There's a kit that sells on Ebay for 80$. Basically you take off the airbox, plug a metal pipe from the carb to wherever you want, and put a air filter to the other end. If I were you I would try to do it by myself; buying the Ebay kit is a bit expensive for what it really is. Just cut about 2-3'' of your stock snorkel ( The plastic tube that goes from your carb to the airbox ) then find a pipe of about the size of the snorkel. Then head to your local ATV parts shop and look in their Uni or K&N parts book to find a filter that can fit on your custom intake. It'll cost your about 40$ including a air filter. :)

forget changing the intake tube.
You've already listed a slip-on and "upgraded airfilter".
Get rid of the airbox lid, or make your own Outerwears lid cutout.
Grind down the header welds on the stock headpipes.
Get your carb PROPERLY jetted by someone who is experienced,
and put in a Sparks key.

All cheap and easy mods, Best bang for your Buck, and you should be getting around 28 to 30 HP at the rear wheels.
(depending on what piston you've got)

pretty much anything you'd like to learn about your 400ex can be easily found with a search of the various subjects.
