I just bought a 2001 Raptor 660R in boxes. The frame was just painted so the guy tore it all apart and never put it back together. Anyways I'm usually a Honda guy and I don't know much about these craptors. Does anyone know any common problems I should know about? or and recalls and such? Any and all info would be much appreciated. Thanx guys

thanks for bringing back the bad memories.

The 2001 tranny had bad gears. Do a search and there is an aftermarket company that makes gears.

The dual carb setup is much tougher to adjust.

The stock one-way bearing is junk. Aftermarket company makes one for this issue too.

Give me more time to think about it. We called mine the Yamaha "One ride" or the Craptor.

I don't understand the one way starter clutch WTF does that mean.

It is a one-way clutch that essentially makes the starter engage and turn the engine over. It is designed so it only grabs (engages) in one direction. Problem is sometimes the engine kicks a bit backwards when you shut it off and damages the one-way bearings. Pretty soon you hit your starter button and it just spins without engaging the engine.

I had zero trouble out of my transmission. I think the linkage shifter had alot to do with the transmission problems. I switched to a Roll Design direct shifter pretty early on. It would kind of stick in between gears if you didn't pull or push on it really hard. I did have to replace the one way. The twin carbs were a pain to tune, but overall it was a pretty good engine. I switched to a KTM engine in '05 for obvious reasons, but for a play bike a 660 would probably be my first choice.

I think you can only buy the 2002 tranny gear set. I think the company that was making replacements stopped.

Even www.raptortranny.com is no longer be hosted. I am guessing the bulk of the 2001 Raptors have been "retired".

Here is my last tidbit of info. I rode a Raptor as my main ride for a year. We had a small track near my house where I timed my laps. I could jump off my Raptor and onto a 400ex that I wasn't used to riding. I could actually get faster lap times on it. That pretty much sold me on selling the Raptor and buying a 3rd 400ex for my family. The only places I could distance myself from my stepson was on long straights. The Raptor will eat a 400ex in a heartbeat. Same for hillclimbing. It might not be a Banshee but it is a close 2nd.

I had an '01 for a while with no problems. I sold it to my uncle and he still rides it to this day without any issues.

My buddy has an 01 and has beat the crap out of it ..... no problems at all other than a bad regulator .

Raptor 660's aren't bad bikes if the issues are fixed. Stock they are two inches narrower then the 400ex so that explains some of the tippy feeling. Make it wider and they aren't all that bad.

yep I jumped back and forth from the 450r to the 660r and holy cow night and day! the 450 pulls a little harder but the 660 has a higher top speed. dragged my buddy on his mildly built 450r ( full motoworks, stage 2 cam, dyna ignition, and K&N) ( my 660 has full hmf and K&N) and he creamed me off the line but I caught him on the top end.

with a full aftermarket exhaust, afermarket cams, airbox mod, a good play port and the stock carbs dialed in to the mods with some good gearing and it'll push the new 700's and 450's out of the way. :D the only downfall is that the suspension sucks balls.:ermm:

yeah its pretty top heavy to say the least. but I'm gonna finish getting all my suspension done on the 450r first
