Repainting the a arms

Just recently bought a 01 400ex. My first project was to repaint the a arms cuz they were pitted and just made the quad look horrible. So i have pulled everything apart and sanded everything. Next is the part i have the question about. I want these things to look good for just more than one season. Should i use some rattle can primer and then just give it a 5 coats of black or what? Powder coating is out of the question due to the budget. Just not sure how many coats of black i should lay down? Also what about clear coat? Yes, no, how many coats? Thanks guys

Try 3 coats primer 3 coats paint and 3 coats clear, thats what I did on mine and I havent recieved no chips so far.
