Just bought me a 2001 400ex with a blown piston and sleeve for $500 bucks... I was thinking about using one of the 440 kits on ebay to get it running again..

What do you guys think about it? I can still run it on premium gas right?

What else would I have to do to my bike to make it run correctly? Or is it just bolt on and go?

So first of all ignore the urge to listen to the answer you were looking for. Second a cam like the stg 2 hotcam will lower compression enough to make a positive difference lowering combustion temps and boost power in the process. A stg 3 will drop it the most. Lastly you can thicken your base gasket using RTV on both sides or double it which will enlarge the combustion chamber thus lowering compression.

get a stage 2 hot cam,gtt head studs,cfr450 timing chain, and some hd valve springs.and with 11:1 you should be fine running premium.

Maybe the 440 isn't the route for me then... Speed really doesn't matter to me much as I just ride with buddies on the trails casually..

I'm looking for 2 things mainly; reliability and low cost.

Maybe just finding a stock 85mm and getting it bored for a 416 would be a better option?

I was just looking at those 440 kits cause they said "bolt on and go" and thought I might get out a little cheaper.

Stock sleeves are cheap ($65) so if you can just replace the one you have that's a good option.

no it wontr be a bolt on and go... next you will need a new bigger head pipe then a bigger carb... that plus a hot-cam is just needed to let it flow or breath better... then a bigger oil cooler on & on & on it goes lol

Ok.. I just bought a used stock cylinder jug(85mm) in great shape..

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HONDA-TRX-400EX-TRX400EX-PISTON-KIT-TOP-END-GASKETS_W0QQitemZ140346922353QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMo tors_ATV_Parts_Accessories?hash=item20ad541571&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245

Will that kit work... or is the compression to high so that I would have to buy other parts?
