when taking off the head, do i need to remove dowel pins to get the head off?

i dont want to buy a dowel pin removal if i dont have to

and also do you need to break the cam timing chain?

this winter im planing on getting the head ported, and putting in a new piston

No you dont need to. They can stay right where they are and as for the cam chain u cant break it , u have to remove the cam and dont let the chain fall down its a b*** to get lined up again. Also loosen the timming chain tensioner to get chain off cam. Its an easy process take your time and everything will come off as needed
