Could I use a 88 TRX 250x as a donor bike for making a 250r? There is one on my craigslist that is selling for about $800. it is not in great shape, but I guess I am looking for a project. I like the vintage Hondas and would like a sweet play toy.

Is this going to be too much fab work to make it happen? What about if I used this to make a Hybrid? Is it the same frame as the 250r's?

Thanks for your help and information.

no, 250x's are not even close to being like a 250r, i would suggest waiting until you can find a trx 250r.

no sir!! not even remotely close. you'd be ahead to put a 3fiddyX engine in that frame. that would be a wild ride. :D

nah... if it won't work then i don't need it. I am trying to get myself a good project bike. Something cheap to pick up that I can mod out nicely over time.

Thanks for the help guys.

dont let me deturr you from the buy.... a 250x engine can be made to run really well and that quad would make a nice build. or are you wanting to go 2 stroker?

all valid questions. let me tell you what i am looking for.

I have an old 86 TRX 125 that I restored. it was mine as a kid and so it was free minus the parts and labor to rebuild it. So i am finishing that up.

Now i was looking to get into racing quads MX. I was going to buy a new 08 race ready LTR450. But it would take more money than i am willing to part with now. the economy sucks, as we all know, and my job is shakey.Plus my wife is 5 months pregnant with our first child. So i didn't want to drop the big bucks right off the bat.

So i figured that i would find me another nice vintage quad to rebuild over time. I liked the 250r's because they use to be the stuff back in the day and the 2 strokes sound cool.

But pretty much i am looking all over the place for a good racer to rebuild. I thought this would be a nice pickup for the price if i could convert it to one of the more power producers. but it seems like it won't quite work. which is fine. I just thought i would try.

quite understandable. in that case i would wait and get a good used 250r and take your time in building it. they are very fun quads to build/ride. i think you would enjoy it much better.

yah there is a local guy here that has an 86 250r that is in pieces. he said that he is restoring it, and lost interest. he says all of the parts are there, and he has done a bunch of powder coating on it. but i saw pictures and it looks rougher than i would have done in restoring it. he was originally wanting 2500$ for it, and is now down to 2000$. But i only offered him 1000$ for it. i think i would be getting in to who knows what if all i get is pieces.

here is the link.

yah, $1000 sounds better. I think that it is a little rougher than he leads on. he sent me better, closer pictures of it and it is not original, mint, showroom state.

I stumbled across another that is or was for sale through our local racing association. Now this is what i would like to eventually have.

see if the pic works.

he was asking $3500 for that one. it is a 330.

The old 250X would be a fun little build. I had an 88 when I was much younger and I rode the dog poop out of that thing. I also had a 300ex once for a little while and it took a good beating too. You might spend less on the 250X and you would have a fun play ride but the 250R would still be hard to beat.

I would think if you could get all of it for a $1000, then I would be on it. Much more than that and I might would have to think about it. You do not know what you still need and what the motor might need. You know you are going to need more parts than you think you will.

But you could build it up nice too. I built my 86 from just a frame and I am guessing about $2000 or so in it total. Plus or minus a little. Just depends on how much you have to spend and how much time you have to spend.

Yea if you can get it for $1000 bones, I agree with the rest of the people on here- that would be a good deal. I bought my 88 in full running condition with extra tires, rims, and other various bits for $1,600.

If you're picky about the way you restore things, it won't be a cheap total rebuild by any means- depending ofcourse on how in depth you're planning on getting, and how much patience/time you have to casually build/assemble it. There are still plenty of parts out there, but they fetch more of a premium now than they did just 5 years ago. Most people with spare OEM parts know what they have and how much others will pay because a lot of the parts are discontinued.

I know this; counting what I spent originally, and everything I've bought and sold to make my 250R what it is now; I could have easily bought a new leftover TRX450R. With cash. And my 'wheeler is by no means a museum piece; there's used parts all over it. Part of that makes me sick...haha, but you're right...it is a lot of fun piecing things together and ending up with a 'wheeler that not anybody can go out and buy off the showroom.

That is what I like about mine. It is not something that just anybody can go get from any dealer. You just about have to build it if you want it.
