I was looking at getting a 400ex maby next year and have looked at a few but dont know what year to go with. There is a really nice 1999 but i dont know if thats to old. Do all years have reverse? What do you think looks better the older plastic or newer? Let me know with any info on the 400ex like things ill have to keep my eye on. Thanks.

2005 and up have reverse and for me it is a must. I ride alot of trails and reverse really comes in handy.

if the 99 is in good condition id say go for it.the only thing that changed is on the 05 and up they have reverse and there geared a little differently and they changed the plastics.i personally like the older ones better(99-04).you really dont need reverse.i worried about that to when i got mine but you hardly need it and its light enough to just pick up the back end and swing it around.

not really, just regular maintenance: changing the oil, adjusting the valves. 400's are tough quads, and they're very reliable. Mine went 10 years without needing the motor built.

i dont like the first two years of any quad that new to a market. there are still bugs in them id stick with the 01 and up.

I have a '99 and other than "bold new graphics" Honda didn't change anything on the 400ex until '05. I've never heard of any first year issues or bugs with the 400ex. At ten years old, and two previous owners who did who knows what to the quad before me, my EX still runs great without even a hint of smoke.
