I have a 400ex with new tires, plastic, sparks advanced timing key, full White Brothers E series, jet kit, etc. A guy wants to trade me an stock 05 450r that he says has a 06 motor that doesn't run. He says that he took the valve cover off and saw that the exhaust lobe was wore off the cam. Tells me that the valves may be bent. I have no problem working on this bike and would love to have it, but is it worth it?

You can find a better deal. At least one that runs since your 400 runs.

I traded my 400 and little bit of cash for my 450r and haven't looked back.

dont buy someones problem. i like the 450 but it seems you need to take extra care of it. oil wears quick in the 450 and everything cost twice as much for the parts. who knows if he took care of it or just rode it till it blew up bought a new engine than it blew again. then again if the bank is not an issue i would just buy some hd stuff for the top end.tell the guy to throw some cash in the deal. if he has a problem with it tell him your trading a working quad for a beater quad.maybe you can get some cash fix it and have some money for a fat L.(victory cigar)

He says it was covered by the factory warranty and that Honda put a 06 engine on it. I don't know though the fact that Honda would put a different year engine on it sounds kind of weird.

I have a 2004 400ex and I just bought a 2005 450r. I cant wait to feel the differences. I know some go back to the 400ex but i'm just looking to go even faster so i'm thinking i'm saying goodbye to the 400ex.

Yours is prolly worth more if it really has those problems. Typically if something goes wrong in the head then there is alot more than just a bad cam lobe. You will mostly need all new lifters, valves, cam, possibly piston or rings and maybe a bore if any shavings went down into the motor. You could easily have $500 in damage. Thats if you do the work yourself. I myself wouldnt do that deal at all especially straight up. For a problem like that to occur he definitly didnt take care of it and if something like that happened I cant imagine what the bottom end looks like especially on the 2005 which already have crank/crank bearing issues. The 450R really take alot of maintance and if not taken care of well or consistently can go to hell in a hurry.

Yeah guys, thanks for your input. I don't think I'm going to do this deal now. Everyone has gave me a lot of info on the 05 450r's. They sound like they have a lot of problems if you don't keep up the maintenance, and jugging by this guy he didn't.

Thanks everyone for your input. So now that I'm not gonna get a 450 should I go 416 or 426? lol.

the 04/05's is the best years to get.

do the 416.that way you can bore it out again if u have to if someting breaks.they also run cooler cause with the 426 the sleeve is really thin

I do not like the 450R compared to my EX. I like to trail ride and the 450R has no bottom end compared to the 400EX. And I have ridden both on the outlaw trails of WV.

But the decision is yours.

Too much clutch slipping is required for tight and rocky terrain. Now if you are riding in wide open area all the time the the 450 is the way to go.
