What are the differences between the 2001 and newer models such as the 2005? I have ridden an '05 and liked how it ran, but the guy ended up not selling it to me. If the 2001 is in good shape, should I fork out about 2K or search for a newer model? He says its all stock with low hours, less than 50 is with original tires. Any advice would be appreciated.

Im hoping to find an '05 in my area, but stumbled across this '01. Just wanted someones opinion on if it would be worth it to wait and find a newer model, even if this one is in good shape.

I would wait if I were you. I paid 2k for my 05 and it came with a lot of extras; wheels, tires, nerfs, bars, exhaust etc.

Prices fluctuate from state to state. There are deals people get in some states that just don't happen in others. I'd be hard pressed to get someone to let go of an '05 for $2000 in my neck of the woods, for example. But, then I live in a state where everyone seems to think their ATV's are gold-plated. Your mileage may vary. I would check out some of the used value guides (ie KBB or NADA) so that you have an idea what quads are going for in your area. It may give you place to start negotiating a price, if you find something you like.

The difference between the 01 and 05 are the plastics and reverse. The newer will have reverse.

50 hours is super super low for a 01 400ex. i gave 1500 for my 01 400ex. that has a full exhaust,nerfs,tires, and cam'd

i wouldnt give 2 for it

I paid 1300$ for my 01 400. The ball joints were shot so I bought a set of a-arms for 350$. But besides that I needed new rear tires for 200$. the plastics are cracked but I sewed 'em back together and sanded em down and tried plastic renew.

The things with quads is everyone says they have low hours, unless he mounted an hour meter it's his word... so that doesn't really hold much water unless you really know him. Also my quad had full prm skids, houser stem and riser, tag handle bars and a new chain and sprocket.

05's and newer come with reverse.

hope this helps, Matt

I just looked at the 2001 and I'm not kidding it looks brand new. Original tires, nothing wrong at all. Extras included protaper handle bars and they had black nerfs on it. I can tell it is low hours so I may buy it for the 2k they think they have to have. The tires still have about 80%.

$2000 sounds like a great deal to me. In Canada a clean 01 your looking at $3000-$3200.

yeah man i dont think its that bad of a deal really..i just bought an 03 for 2300 and it had an exhaust and that was it..since 03 its only had three tanks of gas ran through it..its like Rkangel7 said price flucates..here everyone rides the fourwheelers on hills and flips them and takes them in some rough areas..so around here that was a good deal..i knew the guy i bought it off of real well so i know the history on it..for instance a guy had a 05 for 2800 with only a couple rides on it..and once again thats a good deal here in KY..

Just any FYI,
About 6 months ago I sold an 04 for $2000 that had less than a 100 hours on it, works triple rate shocks, pro-armor nerfs, skid and a-arms plates and pro taper bars. Also still had original tires (70%) I know that the guy who bought got a great deal, but I also knew that it was 5 years old and no matter how much I maintained it no-one buying it would care, it was still 5 years old.

Around where I live 400EX's go around the $2k mark if they are in good shape. Some a little more some a little less. I bought a 2000 and 2002 for $2k ea. One from a 75 year old man and one that was a wife's quad. The plastics didn't even have scratches on 'em. Both were immaculate, completely stock, and had about 20hrs on them. I figure they were worth it. I could a paid a bit more and got something with mods, but then again I could have ended up with something that wasn't put together right too.

shoot, where I just moved from (desert Cali) you would be hard pressed to find ANY 400ex, regardless of year for less than 2500...and where Im at here in Ga now you never even see them for sale, so you could ask what you want for it...I say go for the 01, sounds like a great deal
