ok guys, i figured i would make a new thread now that i have the facts about my swingarm

i have an 87 R and the previous owner for some reason put an 85 swingarm on it. the rear brake was a little wobbly when i got it and the carrier was shot. i bought a new carrier for an 87 and bam it didnt fit (not knowing i had the 85 arm at the time)

now i was looking through a bunch of extra parts the guy gave me with the purchase of the bike, and behold i have an 86/87 swingarm that my carrier fits in. i was about to start transfering everything over when i asked myself why someone would swap out the correct arm for the atc style...maybe this one is defective?

so my options are:
leave it on and get a new carrier
swap it out to the 87 and i think i need a new brake stay plate, or do i?
look into a 450r style

anyway here are some pics tell me what the best route for me to take would be. thanks

if you are interested in swapping to the 450r swingarm i have the parts to do it i am willing to sell. i have the swingarm w/skid and chain guides, dog bone and link, and a used 450R carrier. i was looking into doing the swap and never got around to doing it.

does that 87 swingarm look ok? or should i just get a carrier for an 85?

it looks o.k. but remember its going on 30 yrs old. my stock 86 swinger had 5 long cracks on seems, some of them were not visible through the paint.

my advice is iether 450r swap, or have the 87 arm blasted and checked, before using it. or go with an aftermarket arm. they arent to expensive used.

go with the 87 swingarm. it just going to be easier in the long run.

I think the caliper is different on an 85 also, or at least the slide part of it where it connects to the stay. I would say it got switched due to a bearing carrier failure or brake caliper failure and these parts were available to them cheap or in a hurry.

ok so here are my options...please let me know what the best move is:

option 1
use 85 swingarm (mounted already)
purchase new carrier/bearings....165
use existing brakes/87 axle
try to sell existing carrier

option 2
use left over 87 (sitting in garage)
purchase new swingarm bearings ...45
new brake stay.....30
any thing else needed?

am i missing something? would anything else not be able to match up? i have an 87 axle do to the sprocket mounting on the inside. is it worth the extra labor to swap out the 87 swingarm? i figure cost is about the same after i sell my carrier as long as there is nothing else needed.

please help asap i am looking to get this done now

thanks

If you're going to use the '87 arm then you'll need the TRX caliper bracket along with the TRX stay, assuming the '85 caliper is the same as the 86-89 TRX, which I believe they are.
