I race MX on my 250R all over Ohio and love it. Wouldn't change a thing.

What all do you guys have done to your Rs for motor cross? Wat brand of after market parts if you dont mind me asking? How do they compete with todays 450s ?

i think they are better than todays 450's but you need to put long travel front ends and rear ends on them.

Personally i run a +3 long travel front and and a +4 highly modified rear end with a stock shock to provide more travel.

it does me just fine and all i race against is 450's.

I totally agree. Suspension is the key!

Yep thats so true, i would rather run around with a dead stock motor and a full blown long travel front and rear end then a full blown 431 puma and stock suspension.

These guys are not kidding! Take it from a guy who rode his 250R for 13 years on stock suspension and just recently bought aftermarket suspension- WOW! what a night-n-day difference in the quad! I'm kicking myself now for not buying suspension 13 years ago!

I race XC, and mike bike handles great. Once again, Suspension is the key to go fast. Im still running a stock cylinder with some mods and i can hang with the 450's with out a problem. But when your race is 1.5 to 2 hours, suspension keeps you fresh longer which equals faster

Hey, I'm running around on regular travel 0 preload Elka's and +2 arms on my 88. What would you say is the difference between the long and std shock? Does going longer make much difference?
Thanks!

most people dont get what long travel is, long travel is not going wider, its getting more suspension travel before the shock bottoms out. Stock 250r is around 10 both front and back and a good number is 12-14.

yeah, long travel is a longer shock body, holding more fluid. And because of the longer body, it has a longer shaft, giving more travel from when the shock is fully extended to bottomed out. As long travel holds more fluid, it can be valved better and it will stay cooler, resulting in better suspension over-all action. In alot of cases, a long travel VS standard travel shock, the difference isn't much in travel numbers, at times exactly the same. The difference comes in HOW the suspension acts. It would be far more accurate if it was called long shaft/long body shocks. Its called long travel for a marketing thing, nothing more.

I got my R earlier in the year and started doing XC racing right after I got it. I started out completely stock and like everyone else said suspension should be your first investment. The same day I put a set of ebay works shocks on I got 2nd place in the biggest event of the year for this area. Over the off season I plan on completely redoing the suspension. I also plan on a hydraulic clutch but other then that suspension will be my main goal in upgrading.
