i have a 2001 400ex. i just got it and it was blowing oil. i took it apart and noticed the piston and rings were shot. i took it down to my local honda shop and he said i needed it bored. he mic'd it and said i'll have to get a 87mm piston. from what i understand is thats the 416? now if that is what it is what do i need to know. i dont want to run race gas or anything like that. do i need a stage 2 cam to make it run right?i really dont know what to do. please help!

Thank You,
Bob

should be able to run a 11:1 on good pump gas, and you can keep the stock or upgrade to a stg 1 or 2

You can 10.8:1 JE or 10:1 or 11:1 Wiseco plus a few other off brand pistons and all run pump gas. As long as you stay below 11:1 you will be fine.

ok thank you. i did notice that my cam doesn't have the decomp thing and that little plunger with the spring isn't in there so do you think i might all ready have a stage 2?

Very interested in seeing what comes of this thread as I am getting ready to tear down my '01 400 as well due to billowing blue smoke out up just off idle and held there. Thinking I want to do 416 with stage 1 but dont want the stage 1 to be a waste of money and be wishing I would have done the stage 2. Sorry to whore the thread.

99zq i really like my stage 1 in my 416, any set up would be great depending on the conditions and what you want to do with it. What are you wanting out of it? if we know this we can help you out with the right stuff. do you want to run 93 or lower or higher? also a good question which will determine the compression you want to run. after choosing this then you can choose a cam to suite your riding and the compression. you can run any cam with any piston without any trouble some are just better suited than others. so if it is stock and you dont want to get one you could go with a 10:1 with the stock cam if you wanted otherwise to get some more out of 10:1 you could get a stage 1. 11:1, stage 1 or 2 works well. steve

yeah any gasket kit will work but the 3 peice metal ones from cometic are about the best you will find. for a good trail machine a stage 1 or 2 will be great depending on if you want a lot of low and mid with a bit less top(1) or more mid and top with a bit less low (2). you will want to run at least 91 with the 10.8 and you will be set. you will have a great setup. also a good suggestion is a hd cam chain, either a 450r chain or a hd 400ex chain. the 450 ones are a bit cheaper though and i am not 100% but any year should fit off a 450. good luck, steve

If you're thinking about possible cams and you really want regular pump gas, remember that the bigger the cam you get, the less compression you'll be making in the end. The stock cam will yield you the highest compression.

Anyone know where to get the best deals on said bore kits?

I figured I'd respond in here as opposed to making a new thread.

I, too, am blowing blue smoke. I want to have the top end rebuilded and I also want to run pump gas.

I'm just using the quad for messing around in a field and wheelies.

If someone could link me to a good, cheap kit I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

if you can find the one you want on ebay they are usually the best price then i would check rocky mountain, dennis kirk, magic racing and stuff. you can also contact C&D racing and see how they can do on price they are a site sponsor so they may hook you up pretty good. steve

honda400ex2003, I to am mainly doing trail and fairly open area riding, as I pretty rarely get into 4th gear hard. I want dependability, but still want a little more power than stock. I don't want to spend tons but I will replace the cam and timing chain if it will save money down the road. I will do some port and polishing myself after reading up a bit more on that. I assume I will be rejetting too so any help there is appreciated as well, if just for a starting point that I can fine tune from there. I there anything I need to do to valves or is that pretty much left alone for what I am wanting?

Also for extra info I am running a T4 slip-on and uni filter. I have not had carb apart but from the "spark plug test" I am looking very good as only having dark grey coloring on ceramic.

Thanks to all.

99, i would say you would have a ton of fun with a 10:1 or 11:1 416 and a stage 1 cam for trail riding. I do mainly trail riding too and rarely see 4th as well when doing so so it is really nice to be able to wheelie and such if i want. it is tough to ride with parents lol. anyway it would be a good idea to put a new cam chain in, for the 50 bucks or so it is really good assurance that all will be good for a long time. Cams are only done to increase hp cause the stock one would work fine for a long time. my jetting is in my sig with my t-4 so that should get you really close. all you should have to do with the valves is readjust them when you install the hotcam to their specs. this is pretty easy so it is not a big deal. for the set up i have i have about 500 in the bore, piston, hotcam, port and polish, and a cam chain. I did all of the work myself though. if you have any other questions pm me so we dont take over the thread. lol sorry also for the post on this one i should have pmed you for this. lol steve

a timing chain from a 450r should be identical to the one out of a crf since they're basically the same motor.

If you have your jetting set how it needs to be, you shouldn't have to change anything. I didn't have to do one thing to my carb when i built my 416.
