Can anyone enlighten me as to the fabrication needed to put a 2005 motor in my 2001 so I can have reverse? The guys at the local bike shop say its not possible...I know better
Anyone?

I would say it's going to be a few electrical differences (safety switches, reverse indicator light, etc.) and possibly the engine has different dimensions or mounts differently. Nothing is impossible without time, patience, and money.

you can put a bottom end of a 05 to a top end of your 01 .... i was told from a friend of mine who races... my friend owns a race shop where i live. he sponsers , u might have heard of a racer named Jarrod Mccurle from Kaska, Pa .. u can do that swap ... a good 05 bottom end will run u about 500 bucks , but its better than going out and spending 6 grand on a new 400ex .. ! makes sense !

Why wouldn't it be a straight upo swap? (besides the extra reverse componants.)

well theres a blown 05' complete motor on ebay right now for $80 starting bid...lol $90 something shipping...ive been pretty handy at rebuilds lately, so i though about maybe givin it a shot...i just rebuilt my brother in laws 87 lt250r quadracer from top to bottom, and then we went riding, only to find out i had no 5th gear...so i tore mine apart, that night, and the freakin countershaft bearing somehow spun inside the case and left aluminium schrapnel in the oil screen,...im thinking the guy i bought it from was riding with the chain WAYY too tight or something along those lines...but reverse sure would be nice for when the old lady is riding it

I did. You don't mention nothing about why you can't.

I have always believed its a basic swap. regardless of what top end you use.

nakomis - The only reason why I believe this wouldn't be a straight forward swap is if there are any electrical differences or mounting differences. However, no one with knowledge of this has chimed in yet.

I say get the '05 engine because it's cheap and figure it out for yourself.:D

I've done it, sort of. My cousin broke the frame really badly on his 06, and bought a used 2000 frame off ebay. The motor and wiring harness and all other components fit as though it was desinged for it, which it was. The frame is exactly the same, no difference. The guys at "your local bike shop" are either stupid or full of ****.

they've gotten to know me down there and IMO they frown on the money their service department isn't making off me...
thats why they act like that at the dealership by me

The guys at apex are pretty cool once you've done alot of business with them.

I hate RMCP, I live right near it and won't go in there. Their parts dept manager and I had a real go at it one day when I was trying to buy a throttle cable for my Chinese pit bike (which is nothing more than a copy of a Honda CRF 50) He wouldn't sell me the part "cause it won't work and I'll end up trying to bring it back"

I know better, and it amazes me that they wouldn't even take my money, even if I knew damn well that it wouldn't fit.

I called the parts manager everything but the kitchen sink, and then sent the owner a nasty email.

**** RMCP

Not any extra, however I do have an Sudco FCR 39mm race carb for the 400 that I don't really need. Its set up for a push/pull twist throttle, but a 450 throttle housing and cable will work if you'd prefer the thumb style.

Seriously bad *** carb, no choke circuit. I'll let it go for $200

The starter is different on the 05 bottom end so you will need the 05 starter.
