Hello all,

Looking at a 86 250r in two hours and need some advice on what to look for on these atv.

Any advice would be great as this will be my first quad.

look close on the frame for cracks around the motor mounts and around the area where the bolt for the swingarm goes through. There are a couple other weak spots maybe someone else can chime in, also look for wet spots make sure nothings leaking. look at the cases close for any cracks or cheesy repairs.

This isn't exactly what you asked but it gives some good info on what to look for, I was in your shoes about 6 months ago.

Lift the front end and shake the tires. If there is play then you will be replacing the bearings. Do the same for the back end. Check the chain and brakes. MAKE SURE YOU TEST DRIVE IT!!!!! There is no easier way to find something that is wrong then to drive it. If everythings good buy it, and have yourself some fun! I hope all goes well.

It's an R, I think we all just buy them to rebuild anyways, right?? Gotta add that custom touch! ;)

He could not get it started and so I could not test drive it. It seem to well taken care of !!! I will be back to test drive once he gets it started. The seller said he needs to bleed the fuel and change spark plugs. And it will be ready to go!!!

One thing to add, on your test ride, try to shift it into all the gears and pay attention to if there is any "notchiness" to the shifter, or if the quad surges or makes extra noises in certain gears. This would indicate transmission troubles or clutch troubles.

As racerx573 stated, these probelms are all repairable, just where do you want to start with this quad? Go riding right away or right to performing repairs?
