Just curious if anyone has ever made the switch or rides both.

Im the same. I love the tracks but walking distance is trails galore. I hate to ride my 450r in the trails and tear it up though. I think I may just buy a cheap 400ex or man up and buy some trail tires for the 450.

Skip that step and ride someones 450 set up for the woods and go from there.

I had thought of getting a woods quad. If I was, I'm gonna build a 250r using parts to make it either mx width or woods width(with a change of rims), using pump gas, lights and no crazy mods. A second thought of mine was to get a 400ex, do some suspension and leave it alone. Keep it stock width and kinda stock. Maintenance is real easy and cheap, parts are plentiful/cheap. A 450 isn't any faster in the woods than a 400ex or almost anywhere. 450's are easy to stall, a 400ex can lug down to almost stall drop a gear and it pulls right out. Its the rider and bike setup that makes the huge difference.

The really tight woods (47" or less) would level the playing field. But at a GNCC, if you are racing a 400 against 450's, you are going to get left behind (unless you are sandbagging).

Joey Marguria didn't seem to have much trouble waxing MANY 450's when he rode his Z400.... Didn't seem to have much trouble when he O/A'd on his blaster either.... Just playing devil's advocate here. :blah:

comparing a z400's power and a 400ex's power is silly. I've ridden/raced all of these bikes z, ex, r and a 250r and by far the best bike for the woods is a 450r. Go to a local race and 85 % of hte bikes are honda 450r's...thats not a coincidence

There are always exceptions. :p Take your average B rider that rides a 450, and finishes top 5 in class at the GNCC's. Stick him on a 400 with equal suspension, and I'd be willing to bet he doesn't finish top 5.

Let's not hijack this thread into a 450 vs. 400:D

I used to race MX and XC with the same quad. The suspension was setup for XC, because that's what I've always focused on. For MX, I just swapped the wheels tires for some 20" and 18". It's worked fine, if you are just going out to have fun at the local MX track. It would be a less than desirable setup if you were to take it to a national MX. You are not going to find a perfect setup that works perfect for both.

Get your suspension dialed in for the riding you want to focus on, and then make the adjustments you can for the other type of riding.

when I rode bikes I ran MX & AWRCS. Now on a quad I stay out of the woods b/c hitting a tree or big is too much $$.

I know. I just wanted to point out the exceptions are there. :D Back to your regularly scheduled program...

I agree to a point.....

Thats why we will hopefully see CJ running XC on a bike and playing on a quad:p Unless someone wants to step up and keep a quad under him! I cant afford to rebuild them!:p
