After 10 months of gathering parts and putting things together, I was able to start up the R and ride her down the street.

It was so nice to be able to ride it, even if was just for a few minutes.

I took these pictures just this past weekend.

This is what I started with.

I have had a lot of fun building this R up. A lot of thanks go to you guys here. A lot of you have helped with info and parts.

She is not anything to special. I have built this on a really tight budget. I did not think I would have been able to get it this far in the time frame that I have. I still have some bugs to work out but that is expected.

It is an 86 frame that I beefed up.
89 swing arm.
Lone Star Racing +2 +1 front end
RPM axle
Works rear shock built for me.
Front Works tripple rates.
86 motor w/ long rod crank
Bumped up compression
FMF pipe
Twist throttle
36mm carb
400EX front brakes and spendles

That is enough to give you an idea of her. Not the meanest one out there, but she is alive and running.

Another R brought back to life.

Looks good! How was the build? That a seat cover off ebay? Or where if I may ask? Im in need of one. Getting ready to start putting mine together for the first time also and I have never wrenched on an R. Have the manual and flipped through it a bit seems pretty close to a 400 except for the wiring and obviously the power plant.

I got the seat, tank and plastics from a buddy of mine. Not sure where he got it from. I still may change it but it is going to stay on there for now.

The build it self was not bad. I had a lot of fun with it. Hunting down parts, reading and asking questions about it. Just trying to figure out what was the best bang for the buck and what would work out or not. I have had every nut, bolt and bearing in my hands and I know everything on it.

It was really kind of good I have been so tight on cash for it. It made me go slower on things like all the work I did on the frame.
I think I ended up with a better product in the end.

And yes she was putting up a little bit of a fight there at the end. Guess it is just the nature of a frame up build.

Now I need to work out a few bugs. I know I need to work on jetting. Got to get the tow better. I thought I had it good until I rode it down the street. Set up suspension. Stuff like that.

Maybe, I will have time to take it to the woods this weekend and play a little. It will kill me if I don't get to.

And thanks for the compliment.

She looks really good! Super clean and you have great attention to detail ( i have OCD, i think??).
What are you running for a rear master cylinder?? Custom mounts??
I like the custom rear silencer hanger as well.
Great job!!!

Thanks guys.

The rear master is off of a 400EX. I had a little scrap aluminum and made a plate for it and for a silencer mount too. I am going to re-make them to look better. I just did that for now so that I could get her up and going to work out any other bugs that I know will pop up.

My plan is to ride her this winter and figure out what I do not like and I want to change out. And IF, I have money next summer, tear her back down and get everything powder coated and really work on her looks.

I just spray bombed the frame and some other stuff for now. It was a good thing I did that becasue I had to make a rear mount change after I had it painted. That would have made me sick if it had been powder coated already.

Anybody have any ideas for future looks or mods? I am just going to use her as a play and trail ride. A fun on going project to play with.

Now I need to start doing something with my wife's plan old 400EX. Another project :D

i see you are running a 88 swinger on a 86 frame. Did you add a rear motor mount to the frame??

otherwise nice work! :)

Here are a few pictures that I took After I spray bombed the frame. I am really glad I did not go and do powder coat because I had to go back to the rear mount, heat it and pound a little dip in the cross brace to give the rear shock spring a little room. A slight oversite by myself. :eek2:

Well the bugs just keep comming.

Fired her up and rode around the corner just to put another 10 minutes or so on the motor and when I got back, I noticed a tad of coolant weeping around the head gasket again. I thought I had that problem solved but I guess I was wrong.

So much for getting to go riding this weekend. :(
