hey guys i am thinking about trading my 450r quad for a honda crf 250 dirtbike. its a 2008, but not sure how much power these have? are they compareable to the speed of my 450r?
or would i be happier with a 450 dirtbike?
also how much cash should i ask the guy to throw in?
this is the 450 i might trade
thanks

the power will be about the same. my 06yz250f is completely stock power wise, i'm dead even with my friends yfz with a pipe filter and jetted... also dead even with another friends bone stock LTR. its mostly rider i guess but it should be about the same speed as your 450r. except top end, the 250fs top out quick your quad would have a better top speed.
when i first got a bike i was really not sure on a 250f or a 450 but im really glad i got a 250f. it'll be a while till you need more power. the 450s might be faster but your gonna get around the track faster on a 250 ;)

personally i would go for the 250 unless you are fat.
i ride mainly trails so a 450 is a bit too much motor for me plus i fall down alot. if you mainly ride track then go 450 but in the woods i keep up with 450s riddn by guys raised on 2 wheels and on their own land, mayby they are going slow because they now i suck on 2 wheels idunno
i have a 2004 and by no means has it stranded me all i do is keep the filter clean and carb clean it fires up with about 45 kicks no prob :D :D

when i test rode my 450, i about pissed my pants at first, but i was in love with it. it will take a while to get used to, but when you do, you will love the power, and want more.

exact opposite. to get any decent power out of the 250f's you have ot revving the pure piss outta them. i personally love that but its also what causes all of the valve issues and premature wear.
my 250sxf revs to like 11,500 before rev limiter. i know the 08 250sxf rev even higher. something like 12,800.

no not at all, the 450s have more bottom, mid range, and top end. they're just beasts. unless you can keep up with all the B class bike guys or are 220lbs, get a 250.
and you should be alright with the valves in an 08 honda. i know the 04 and 05s were bad for that. from what i've heard they're one of the more reliable bikes for that year.

I ride my friends 250f's all the time at the track on practice days. I feel like the 250f if your a gear too high you will really notice it but on a 450 you can just power right out of it.

if i were to trade for the guys 08 crf250 how much cash should i ask him to throw in?
so you guys were sayin (well k4f5x0r) to get good power out of the 250's you have to rev the piss out of them?
what exactly is an atvantage of a 250 over a 450? and opposite

well the benefit i see from 250 is weight. i can barely pick up my 250 when i drop it and im 15 and weigh 140 and stand 5'9"
again with the weight is if your a beginner and light enough, its easier to learn to blast through berms because the bike is lighter and therefore easier to layover through the turns.
450's if you can pick them up when dropped are better for their low end grunt and overall much more powerfull motors.

i wouldnt really say any advantage, its just what you can handle. if you think a 450 would be good for you then get the big bike. its just alot of bike for someone who doesnt ride bikes

You make it sound like there is a 50lb difference between a 250 and a 450. Am I missing something? There's a 15, maybe 20 pound difference at tops between bikes. If you can't pick that up, hit the gym for a few weeks.
As far as 250 vs. 450, a 250 will have to ridden quite a bit harder to be competitive. By the sounds of it, you aren't racing so this runs in your favor. 250F's are prone to engine failure mainly due to the constant high revs, however, most riders tend to blow off the maintenance which usually ends in motor failure. If you just ride the bike without any kind of up keep, you're almost 100% guarenteed an engine failure.
I've been riding full time 4 stroke 250F now for roughly 2 years and they are awesome bikes. Easy to ride, smooth, controlable, etc. Just an overall fun bike. However, I feel much more comfortable on a 450, but that's just me. A 450 is not as predictible, somewhat harder to ride if you're inexperienced, etc. It's better to start on a smaller bike and work your way up.
To the guy who's friend has a crf, if he's complaining about loose spokes and shimming valves, he needs to take up basket weaving or something. That's all part of maintaining a bike. It doesn't surprise me that he's having problems with it just from that little bit of information.
When it comes to reliability, personally I'd go with the yzf. I've had mine for 2 years or so and only one valve has been out of spec. I usually check my valves every 20 hours or 4 rides or so. They come stock with Ti valves, so that's a plus. There's no hiding the fact that honda has valve issues. They do often require more checking and tuning than other bikes, but that's the nature of the beast. It's easier/cheaper to replace the parts when they need replaced rather than doing a complete rebuild. You ask how I know this? We have two crf250's and three crf450's in our family.
Personally, I'd go with the 250f and see how you like.

yes there is only about a 17ish pound difference, but flying through the air on bikes youve never ridden before that could make a difference.
i was just trying to imply a 250f is a good base to learn on, unless you already have the skill to use a 450 to your advantage, or if you need it because a 250f is to underpowered for you.

In the air they're all about the same. I can hit just about any jump on my 250f and get on a 450 and hit the same jump. What I do have to change and adjust to is my cornering on a 450. It takes me a good 10 laps or so to get the feel for a 450, other than that, they all fly the same.
A 250f is a good bike to learn on no disagreeing on that.

as far as the 2010 crf 250/450 differ in weight, the 450 is light by 1.2 pounds if anyone was curious. the seat height is the same too, and supposively the new 450s handle like 250s.

its not just the size difference that makes a 450 too much for a beginner, its the power.
