What exactly does a pre filter do and how does it help? I have a K&n airfilter on my 300ex and have heard some people talking about prefilters. What exactly does it do and is it easy to install?

All it does is help catch more dirt with it on.

it's like a very breathable sock for a filter. a lot of people run them. they're good for any condition. dusty, wet dirt, etc.

Water beads off of it like a duck. lol and if you run without an airbox lid it will keep it cleaner longer.

nope just clean it alot more often then with the lid on. Don't go diving into water either.
