With deer season getting close and having a broke leg I figure ill be in the stand a good bit this year. I have a semi auto 30-06 and a marlin 30-30 but Ive been wanting a good bolt-action. Im liking a Rem 700 in 30-06 or .308 but wanted a few more opinions. Any suggestions for a good scope would be good too. My longest shot is around 300 to 400 yds where im hunting.

I had a Winchester Model 70 in 7mm magnum. I got rid of it because it was a cannon! I currently use a Marlin 336 30-30. Where i hunt the longest shot is less than 100 yds. Remington 700 or Winchester 70 in 30-06, .308, .243, .270 will be perfect for your area. Savage makes some nice rifles and Marlin is making high powered bolt actions. But the Marlins are exspensive.

A .243 @ 300/400yds?

I dont think so..

Have you thought about a Winchester .300 magnum?

Good rifle for long shots, and doesnt kick as hard as a 7mm mag.

A Remington 700 action is hard to beat. I bought a Remington 700VLS heavy barrel in .22-250 and man that action is smooooooth. 3 shots in a dime at 125 yards does just fine for me.

Granted; the caliber isn't what you're looking for, but I've also shot a similar Savage and there was really no comparison.

I've got a Remington 700 in .270 and I'm happy with it. I like the .270 much better than the 30-06 round.

300 win mag.. damn good gun, depending on which brand you get it might hurt on both ends of the gun tho

We've killed more than a few deer with a .243 around 300 yrds, it's all about shot placement.

And a .300 Win Mag kicks more than 7mm Rem Mag.

I have a .300 winmag and it kicks like a mule, but I really like it. I put a whole box of shells through it the first day I shot it and it just about killed me.

I really like the Browning's with the BOSS barrels....Even a .300 mag in that gun wouldn't kick too bad.

your scope options are endless and only limited by your budget.
High-end: Nightforce, US optics, Accuracy International, Zeiss Divarri series
Mid-grade: Leupold Gold ring, Nikon world class, Swarovski,Shepperd
Lower end: Leupold Vari-X series, Nikon, Trijicon
Budget:Simmons, Bushnell, Redfeild

All of these are great/good pieces of glass and will hold a zero better than you. You truley do get what you pay for as far as durability.

My current deer rig is a Ruger M77 MKII in .300win mag w/Luepy Vari-X II 4x-12x and I like this set-up for deer. But for serious work: groundhogs beyond 350 yrds. I use a 6mm with a US Optics 6-24 and a long range AR15 with a Nightforce NXS 6-24.
Both of these rigs will hold .5MOA to 650yrds. That is the only "real life" instance that it makes sense to drop the serious coin on high-end optics.

you may want to research that a little. Certain models of those old Enfields have been bringing some serious $$ in the last few years.

I like the ballistics on a .300 win mag better but im afraid the kick will be so bad that im going to anticipate my shots too much. i have to shoot my 30-06 atleast 2 or 3 times every so often to get that "twitch" out of my shot. What is it exactly BOSS barrels do? Is it just a browning thing?

Those Winchester 70's look pretty darn nice too. :D

Recoil from a .300WM is greatly overexagerated. Is there more than an '06, yes. But it's not overpowering. Your best be is to try to find someone who will let you fire theirs, go buy a box of 150-180gr. cheapo ammo and put the box through it and see what you think. Can I get accustomed to this ?

The BOSS system is an adjustable muzzle break the Browning has been pimping for 10-15yrs. now. There may be a benefit on some of the heavy calibers, but it's not needed on the .300 IMO. Muzzle breaks direct the gases excaping the end of the barrel out the sides. This reduces felt recoil and greatly INCREASEs muzzle blast and report. I know of a guy that uses a BOSS on an '06 and he carries hearing protection while hunting. Touch one of those things of w/o hearing protection and your ears will ring for two days. Not worth it to me. While taking hearing protection into the feild is a fine idea, I personally dont want bothered with it in the feild. The BOSS requires you to do so. :ermm:

If you think that will be bad, you really wouldn't like my CZ550 .458 win mag. I say you get a 300 Weatherby. That will drop any deer at over 800 yds if need be.

700 in .308 hands down. I have a SPS in .223, I can group an inch with three shots at 200 yards. Very good gun and well built.

But if you hunt where there is a lot of brush and you never have a shot over 75+ yards, I would go with the Marlin.

Try shooting one at 300/400 yards first before you claim it wont do it.

I've been shooting a .243 since I was 16 - do you want to stand 400 yards from me and find out?
