I have a 96 Kx250 dirt bike. I am wanting to trade it for a quad. I put it on craigs list and was offered a 2001 300ex all stock except nerf bars. Than i was offered a 87 250r that the guy saying it just needs a piston. They both are very nice looking quads and i love the reliability of the 300 and love the speed of a 250 two stroke. Which one should i trade for? Thanks for the opinios

a 300ex CAN NOT compete with a modded 450, a 250r EASILY CAN. point made

Sorry to say, but you guys didn't give him very good advice.

I'm not sure what a 96KX250 goes for in your area, but either or could be good trades.

A 2001 300ex in good shape will get him a good reliable quad that if it's in good shape will retain some value - it's still a good cheap beginners quad.
It should be worth $1500 to sell.

The 250R could be a good trade but if the guy says it needs a piston and it doesn't run, it could be a terrible trade that he has to sink tons of money into to get running. The machine is over 20 years old and could be beat and need $4000 worth of upgrades and repairs which would not make it a good trade.

If it's in decent shape and runs, but still needs a piston because of low compression, he could come out of it o.k. if he realizes that a stock 250R will need upgrades in shocks and many other parts to make it rideable (I have yet to see a pair of stock shocks that are not well past their wear limits and offer completely useless bump absorbtion)

As well it is only worth around $1500 in O.k. shape to $3000 if it's got lots of aftermarket parts and is in good shape with OEM plastic.

Simple things that most used/for sale 250R's are lacking are good tires and good plastic which can run $600+ to replace.

wait a second... wait a second. are you trying to say that a all stock 300ex is worth more than a 250r? NO WAY. 250r is 100 times better he willl be better off with a 2-stroke i dont care how nice the 300ex is.

Yea- what he said; I agree. If a guy can handle a KX250; which is obviously not a beginner's bike, I think going to a 300ex ("a good cheap beginner's quad") would be a big disappointment.

The 300ex is a good 4-wheeler, but if you're gonna make a trade like that, save yourself the time and kick yourself in the nuts before the other guy does.

Even though I've jumped thru a few more hoops with my 250r than I've had to, I'm still very satisfied with it. It's a great ride.

Moral of the story; as long as the juice is worth the squeeze, bring home the R.
