Need helping getting power out of my 300ex

Well first thing first, I'm all stock except for K&N and HMF exhaust. Header is in the near future.

Now, I want to do stuff to my quad. I don't race, but I just LOVE customizing stuff, tuning stuff, and make it more powerful/faster. I'm not looking to spend over 1K. Where do I start? Big bore kit? Stroke? Cams? ect? I'm new to this so I don't know where to begin.

Also, I want to keep reliability especially in the area I live. I live in easter PA so there is everything from lots of rain, to cold winters, and super hot summers. I'm not sure if that affects anything, but I'll put that out there. Hopefully you guys can help me out. Also, how close will this be to a stock 400ex?

start off with a header pipe from yoshimura or hmf!then i would buy a 400ex carb, 36t rear sprocket, high lift cam, 330 kit with port and polish

If your only willing to spend a thousand bucks you don't have a hope in hell of catching a 400ex.
