ktm 525xc motor problems

hey my buddy has an 08 525xc and it has no top end and goes through a lot of oil, has any one had this problem and if so what should we start looking at first???

I pulled the spark plug and it was really black and caked in ****, does this mean the velves are toast or what.and also was wondering how much play should the timing chain have???

He needs to do a topend job on it. The rings are shot. When the rings go they let oil blow by. This is the reason the plug is black and you have no topend (no compression). Put a new piston and rings in it and hew will not have a problem.
