Hi guys

I have a 1983 Honda 250R Trike that every time we start it up it is overcharging and blows the headlight bulb and tail light bulb. I am wondering if you could tell me what could be bad causing this? ... Stator, CDI, Magneto...
There is no battery so there is no regulator. I am just unsure how this works. I am afraid to run it as I do not want to burn anything else out.
Thanks

you have to have a voltage regulator even without a battery, my trx 250r has a regulator and i removed it once and the exact same thing happened.

No it does not have a voltage regulator on it. It is a very simple system. It has the stator, cdi, lights, ignition switch. That is it. I am guessing the regulator is built into the stator assembly but I was not sure. This bike is not modified. It ran just fine until the last time we went to start it. I even checked the factory wire diagram and it does not show a regulator of any kind.

hmm, i thoguht every bike had to have one with a stator. So the bike does NOT run correct? Did you ohm the coil? maybe try taking the coil wire cap off and cut off about a quarter of an inch and re screw it in the wire .

The bike runs, but I did not want to run it long enough to ride it because I dont want to burn up the cdi or anything else.

I'm sure it came with a regulator, everything I own does, someone probably removed it, along with the lights. Then when he/she sold it, forgot to put it back on or cut the wires out.

i wouldnt worry about it unless you absolutly have to have lights. It wont hurt it to ride it like as is I dont think.

But I checked the harness and there is no place for a regulator, and the bike has been fine for 3 years. So it must be something wrong with something already on the bike. All we did was start it and it blew out the lights. It is over charging at near 18 volts when running. This will surely burn out the cdi & coil in a short time. The stator must be internally regulated.

the lighting and ignition coils are different. Each is seperate, you can get rid of the lighting coil and the bike will run as before. Maybe the cdi has a voltage regulator in it? That the only thing I can think of. What are the numbers/letter on your cdi box? I have a cdi box on a harness, that looks similar to the one in the parts fiche. The harness is cut up, some. I got it in a box with 82-86 atc250r parts, I figured out what and got rid of the other stuff, can't figure out what harness this in.

That is the answer I was looking for, The lighting coil is separate. Thank you.
I will pull the magneto off and check the lighting coil in the stator assembly.
I will let you know what I find. I imagine the lighting coil must be shorted.

after looking at the wiring dia. im of the opinion that the regulator could be built into the cdi. you have another to try?

no I dont have another one. I will see if I can see any markings on it and let you guys know. Maybe this will help narrow it down.

ok I have removed the stator assembly from the bike and ohm checked the coils, I dont have any specs for what they should read but they do not appear to be shorted. I really dont know what else could be wrong. Does anyone have any specs for the stator assembly and lighting coil?

Thanks

No problem - pop over and show off that Trike on the forum airfoolers.com/forum - the forum is dedicated to 81-84 250R's - the guys over there will most certainly go out of their way to help you resolve this problem.
