I am getting a 2004 ex in a week and this is it, the current mods are listed on the craigslist page. http://lafayette.craigslist.org/rvs/1323482993.html

http://webmail.aol.com/44148/aim/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.26513567&folder=Inbox&partId=4

That is the only clear picture i have of it right now, but i will post more when i get it. I am getting it for 1600 right now. He said that I will have to adjust the idle on it, i am 16 and getting back into it. What should i get first, and yes the fenders are shaved down. and please give me your feedback of the quad, thanks.

I'd get the stock tip for the exhaust (spark arrestor w/e u wanna call it) or just buy a slip on. It wont sound very good or give u much gains the way it is in the pic.
You said your 16 right? I'm 15 and all my parents say is stop wasting your money on the thing ( my 400ex) because you'll want a truck soon. So unless you already have a vehicle or if money isn't tight I would leave it about the same if it runs okay at least for a while.

haha thats great I wish I had same situation. What you gonna get?

About the 400, everyone says suspension is the first thing to do but it is usually expensive. You'll hear alot fo ppl say the 450r revlaves are good but it is still about 600 that way. Or you could spend over a 1000 in elka or fox... just whatever.
I wish I could go back to the first month I had mine shocks would of been my first. I have spent about 800 on mine now and aint got much to show for it. Its in my signature. I mean I still love it but I know It could be better.

you could get a sparks key and a 450r carb, along with a good slipon and you should be set for motor for a while, new tires again cause those are wore quite a bit it looks like, take the lid off the airbox if you dont need it and make sure you rejet if you do that and an exhaust. you should check the oil and change it also when you get it. just a few good things you could do. steve

what do you think about a yellow hmf slip on with a black vector end cap? and how would i re-jet it?

i'd say a gt thunder link and rear shock revalve before any "power" upgrades...

get yfz450 front shocks. best investment i've ever made to my 400ex. and just took a little bit of modification to make it work. keep the back shock its fine.

What are you planning on doing with your ex? Trail riding? Racing? Dune riding? Drags? That may help you decide what you want first.

My honest recommendation, and in this order.....
Pro Armor kill switch.
2" rear wheel spacers.
Steering damper.
Slip on pipe with filter kit and jetting.
Bar raisers.
New plastics.

stay away from wheel spacers, they change geometry..the change puts added stresses and increases bumpsteer...

spacers should be banned

I don't agree. Particularly if you want to ride the sides of sand dunes or you are not yet competant on a quad.

The geometry change is minimal compared to the risk of a quad rolling while duning or being operated by a beginner.

Sure, wheel spacers are not a good idea if you are racing, particularly MX as they will shorten the life of your axle. But for general riding they are recommended by some quad mechanics and instructors.

Also, I am only speaking about rear wheel spacers. YES, spacers on the front are very dangerous.

the guy selling the 400ex is a dumbass
theres no such thing as a k&n exhaust

Jakdice6879

thats what i thought, he bought it from another guy in February and has to sell it im just worried that he didnt know how to treat it and he rode it to hard or put it in the water

08-26-2009, 02:41 PM
maybe it was a typo...meaning he forgot to put the coma in between k&n and exhaust...even though it looks like the stock exhaust with the tip removed...

yea looks more like a stock exhaust with the baffle removed
