does anyone run 24v to the starters, my buddy has a big bore yfz, and it has one heck of a time starting, put a 180 cold cranking amp battery in it, and it still doesnt start very well. does anyone know how to run 24v to the starter, and does anyone know if it will burn the starter up, or damage anything else?

thank you for any help

Ill tell you what, I have a big bore, and had problems with starting. I installed an CBR600 battery, and it took care of all my problems.

Best part is, the battery will hook right up, no need to change any wiring, he will have to get a bigger battery box, or cut his fenders to install it tho.

This is the battery box I used

well he did have a cbr 600 battery, and its not near enough juice. he went with that bigger yamaha powersports battery, and it had like 60 more crank amps of something. he needs something thats going to crank hard and fast. its on a very very high compression big bore btw. cant tell ya what, but i can tell ya its high!

marc, this new battery that it has can be charged with a normal charger. its just not cutting it.

but my original question remains. can we wire it for 24v and not burn up the starter?

Have him tighten up the clearance on the left exhaust valve to make the decompression lever open the exhayst valve a little more. .002 makes a huge difference on the HC motors.

He may also look at the decompression lever assy in the cam to make sure it is working properly.
We have had very high compression motors, using the electric start with the stock battery, with no issues.

24v would require a second battery and a 24v starter. Way too much B.S.

Yes you can run 24 volts to the starter and it will be fine, but you don't want to run 24 volts thru your entire electrical system. I run 2 batteries on my 400ex and know several people who have done it on honda's and yamaha's as well.

well, i told them about the valve clearence, idk if they will do it. but i will let you guys know if they do and it helps or not. and i will also run by them about the 24v starting.

What compression is he running????

I have a big bore, stroker crank, valves, and stage 3 cams, and the CBR battery turns mine over just fine.

Dont quote me, but I am fairly certain the big bore kit I have is 12:1

Is his motor assembled correctly? Maybe there is somthing binding inside that is preventing the bike from turning over properly.

well i guess i can give hint cause no one really knows who he is.

its running about 4 more points than yours proctorbc2005. motor is assembled perfectly. pop start pretty easily most of the time, just doesnt seem like it turns it over fast enough.

Personally I would rather pay $40 for a battery once a year, that $80 for one that will last just as long. Or you could do away with it all together, and install a kick starter.

I have had the batttery in my bike for almost a 3 months now, no issues, I never even charged it orgionally.

If you have charging issues with your battery, I recommend replacing your stator and voltage rectifer.

This is the kit I installed in my bike, easy install, and no more charging issues.

The kick start kit is my next purchase, but I am going to leave the stock starting system in place, just use the kicker as a back-up.

BTW I live your sig. "Put a Little Excitement Between Your Legs---YAMAHA" That is classic.

I've been running the 9bs size battery for a few years on a stock motor and it starts up fast. Im usually the first off the line now with the rekluse. But I have always had problems with breaking the battery internally. This has caused me several DNF in the last couple of years. This year I installed a kick start w/yz250 lever just as a backup. Its hard a S@#$ to kick though

But I have heard off someone running the 24v dual battery setup in our xc series. I just dont see any reason for it on a stock motor. Dirtworks motosports could direct you in the right direction, I beleive they built the yfz that had 24v starting system. I know they also do a honda dual battery setup and they had on on duane johnsons Cam-am a year or so back.
