eeeerrrrmm, an LTR is the way forward. All the guys with YFZ's will tell you they are better but I really don't think thy are.

Are you loking at new quad or second hand?

What year?

I would go with 06,08 I have an 06 blew the motor but I will be back out there an my girl had the 07 yfz450 her bike was good to can't really talk bad about it cause they both are the sh#$ just make sure you do your research on the bike you intend on buying an make sure who or where ever you get it from make sure they kept up on the maintains of the bike

The LTR is a little more rider friendly but the YFZ feels lighter in the air to me. Pros and cons to both but they are both great machines. If you want the wider stance without the extra cost the LTR is the only way to go. And yes I have had both

wut do u mean by rider friendly. Like its easier to handle and stuff like that.

look for an 06 LTR. They can be got stock for $3000 or under and race ready for a little more. Just put a shift pin relocater in it and you are good to go.

where are you finding these $3,000 and under LTR's? Good luck with that. In all reality you will spend around $3,500 for a decent LTR.

ya does that have to do with the third gear or something i heard 3rd gear gos out on them after a while

From what I have read it seems 3rd gear is an issue with '08-'09's

I have had a 06 for 2 years now. I have rebuilt the motor and transmission. Make sure you lock tite the oil lines :D. The shift pin locater helps with support to the engine case the engine case breaks if you land on the shifter. I have been really inpressed with my LTR. But Parts seem to be expensive to find used. Yamaha has made so many, parts are cheaper as with Honda. I just bought a used head for $300 a used honda head is about $150 . Good luck with the new bike either is a huge improvment over a 400.

i lost 1st 2nd and 3rd gears. but mines an 06 and its been ridden since 06 so it was about time. i put the shift pin relocater in it and havent had any problems since. i sold my '04 yfz to get the ltr and im sooo glad i did. the throttle response is incredible and the power is very smooth. id recomend the ltr. hope this helps.

I got my '06 LTR in great shape with full rossier, pro armor nerfs and OMF's all around for $3200 a year ago. So it can be found.

Great jumper and great in the wide open trails but not so good in the tight stuff. It can be done but you have to watch what line you take. That's why I bought a Honda 450R for trails, gncc and harescrambles.

For what you want to do and the area you describe I would go ahead and get the LTR. Here is a pic of my LTR and TRX450R side by side. You can see how much wider the LTR is.

If you got job and that kind of money you could put down 3000 on new and make payments and have a new quad no ones messed with ,just another opion ,thats what Id do. yu never know how bad the motors condition is till its too late .

If you are financing then another quad you might want to look at is the Can Am DS450X XC. I am thinking about getting one later this winter. It is a XC race ready quad. Check them out if you have not yet. Just be careful how you type in the Can Am website because if you are not just right it will pull up a gay wrestling site.:eek2: :blah:
